What. The. Fuck.

He quickly grabbed his phone and called it in to the sheriff’s office. He was assured someone was on their way. He drove right up next to Gary. If this bastard had scared Isa, he was going to fucking murder him.

There was the sound of a gunshot and Gary screamed. Remy ducked. At first, he thought Gary had a gun. But then he saw the other man lying on the driveway, bleeding.

Fuck! Someone shot him. Remy didn’t think, he just dove out of the truck and grabbed Gary, pulling him behind it.

“Loki shot me!”

“Loki didn’t shoot you, you fucking dick. He’s not here.”

Isa was, though. Not that he thought she’d shot him. But where was she? And who was shooting?

“It hurts! Save me!”

“Shut up, you dick. If you’d just done what I said and stayed the fuck away, you wouldn’t have been shot.”

What happened to him was all his own fault.

“Leave!” a female voice yelled. “Go away! I don’t want you two! I want her! The one who was trying to steal my husband.”

Steal her husband? She had to be talking about Isa. But who was her husband?

Fuck. Was this Shawn’s wife? Isa had never met her, but she’d mentioned seeing her.

“Isa wasn’t stealing your husband,” he called back as calmly as he could.

Fuck this bitch.

Where was his girl?

Urgh, he should just let Gary bleed to death. It was only a shoulder wound, so he’d likely be all right until the police got here. Remy got his phone out and sent a text to Ed.

Yeah. He now had the sheriff’s personal phone number.

“He’s mine!” she screamed, firing the gun at them again.

Remy took off his jacket, then his shirt, bundling it up to put it on Gary’s wound.

“Hold that!” he commanded.

“What? Wait! You can’t leave me!” Gary grabbed hold of him.

“I need to find Isa.” He shoved Gary’s hand away. Shit. He peered around the truck, but the woman let off another shot.

“Isa! I have one of your men! I’m going to shoot him unless you come out here.”

Relief flooded him as he realized the other woman can’t have hurt Isa yet.

“Isa, don’t you fucking dare! That’s an order. You stay hidden, baby.” He sent a quick SOS to Loki.

“Come out now!” the woman screeched. “Or I’m going to kill him!”

“Isabelle, you stay hidden!” he yelled back.

The woman let out an unearthly scream. Then she fired her gun again just as he heard the sirens.

“No! You leave Remy alone!” Isa yelled.

“Isabelle! Stay back!” he roared. And then he saw her at the same time the other woman did.

The woman raised her gun! Remy started running but he knew he was going to be too late!

“Isabelle! No!”

Loki raced home.

Thankfully, the hikers had been found so he’d turned around to come home before he’d gotten the text from Remy.

Fucking hell.

Someone was shooting at Isa? Rage and fear filled him as he pulled up his driveway.

There were three cop cars and two ambulances. But he couldn’t see Isa or Remy.

Jumping from the truck, he rushed forward, ignoring Steven who yelled out at him. He raced to the ambulance, where someone on a stretcher was getting placed in the back.

“Isa!” he screamed, coming to a stop when he saw Gary’s face looking up at him. “Gary?”

“Loki!” Steven caught up with him.

“This is your fault, Loki. I’m going to sue,” Gary said faintly.

“Oh, shut the fuck up, Gary,” Steven sneered. “You were here to cause trouble. You deserved to get shot.”

The other ambulance pulled away, lights flashing. His stomach dropped. “Who was in that ambulance?”

“Her name is Gloria Reynolds.”

“Who?”

“Apparently, she’s the wife of Isa’s boss,” Steven said.

Not Isa. Not Remy.

Thank fuck.

“Where are they?” he demanded as the ambulance officer closed the doors on Gary.

“Come with me.”

Isa was shaking like a leaf and she had to keep pausing to bury her face in Remy’s chest as she recounted everything that happened.

Luckily, Ed was a patient guy and didn’t try to rush her.

She was sitting on Remy’s lap in the living room of their house. His arms were tight around her and she didn’t think he would let her go anytime soon.

“Am I . . . am I in trouble, Ed?” she asked.

“Like fuck you are,” Remy said.

“I sh-shot her, though. What if she dies?” She was going to vomit.

“Hey, look at me,” Ed said.

She raised her gaze to his.

“That’s not going to happen. You shot her in self-defense. She shot Gary. And she was shooting at Remy and you. No one will see that as anything other than what it is. Understand?”

“O-okay.”

“Now, I need to go get some updates. We’ll wrap this all up. Maybe you want to go stay somewhere else for a few days?” Ed stood.

She understood why he suggested that. But she also didn’t want anyone chasing her out of her home.
