“I don’t want Shawn,” she said.
What was she even talking about? Women who chased him? If anything, it was the other way around. But as Isa studied her, she noticed the manic look in her eyes. And she got the feeling that this woman wasn’t going to listen to a word Isa said.
Fear flooded her.
All she had to do was keep her calm until Remy got here.
“Don’t lie!” the woman screamed. “I know you encouraged him. I know you want him. He’s attractive, rich, successful. Why wouldn’t you want him? But you can’t have him. He’s mine.”
“You can have him,” Isa said quickly. “I don’t want him.”
“Lies!” the woman yelled.
Okay, so reasoning with the crazy woman wasn’t going to help.
“I know everything! I’ve seen the photos of you! I know that you’ve been spending time with him.”
What was she talking about?
“I don’t know what you mean. Photos?”
“They were all over his phone. Photos of you. I know that those late nights he spent at the office he wasn’t actually working. It’s how I found you. I thought I might be able to scare you off originally. But you were just too dumb to disappear, weren’t you? I’ve always gotten rid of the women who chase after Shawn. He’s too nice to do it himself.”
God, she’d be gagging right now if she wasn’t so scared.
She can’t hurt you. Remy will be here soon.
“What do you mean you got rid of them?” she asked with trepidation.
“Sometimes I would pay them off. Other times, I’d threaten them. I got rid of them one way or another.”
How far away was Remy? Would he be here soon?
“I followed you home one night. Ran your vehicle off the road. But by the time I turned around to come back, someone else had arrived. So I knew I had to leave. I also broke your security light so you wouldn’t see me if I waited for you in the dark. But it got replaced quickly.”
Holy. Hell.
It was her? Not Gary or Shawn?
“After that, it became harder to get to you. Your roommate was around more often. So was that other big cowboy. But I’ve watched you, Isabelle. I’ve seen you with Shawn. I even put a camera in your office. I know how you tempted him. Then when he rejected you, you cry assault.”
Tempted him? Holy shit.
“He was arrested because he assaulted me! I know that might be hard to hear, but it’s the truth.”
The woman reached into a handbag and pulled out a small hand-gun.
Oh fuck. This wasn’t good. At. All.
“He was arrested because you lied to the cops! Because he told you that he didn’t want you! But I know you want him. And I’m going to have to get rid of you now.”
She aimed the gun at Isa and she knew she only had a few seconds to move. She dove to the side as the gun fired, taking off toward the back door.
Don’t stop. Keep running.
She ran outside and across the ground. She didn’t have any shoes on and her feet were killing her. But she ignored the pain, pushing it down as she ran past the coop. Chickens squawked as she raced by them.
Fuck! She’d forgotten that Loki had let the she-demons out. He must have forgotten too. But she managed to get past without being pecked to death.
Gasping for breath, shaking in terror, she hid behind a tree.
The woman called out to her in that crazy voice. What to do? She didn’t have her phone. Her closest neighbors were miles away and Remy was due home soon.
What if this bitch shot him?
The chickens squawked again and the woman screamed.
Shit! What if she was hurting them!
Wait! Loki’s guns!
Isa headed toward the shed. The sounds of the chickens going nuts was hopefully enough that Shawn’s wife wouldn’t hear her.
Running into the shed, she rushed to the gun safe. She grabbed the key, her hand trembling so much that she dropped it twice.
The woman screamed. “Get away from me you fucking chickens.”
Oh God! Oh God!
“Come out, come out, wherever you are.”
Isa grabbed a gun and loaded it before hiding behind some of Loki’s equipment to wait for her opportunity.
That’s when she heard another voice.
“Loki! Loki! Come out of there you motherfucker and face me like a man!”
Oh, fuck.
Gary was here.
Trust him to make a bad situation worse.
Remy pulled into the driveway of their house.
Fuck. After years of moving around, it felt so good to have a place he could call home.
And it wasn’t the building. It was the people in it.
His people.
He hadn’t wasted time getting home after he’d gotten a text from Loki saying he was on a tracking job. Remy still didn’t like to leave their girl home alone.
As he turned into the driveway, his heart jumped as he saw the asshole standing in the driveway.
