Interesting. And concerning.
Since Rockvale was mostly an abandoned industrial area, it wasn’t a town with a lot of traffic—not even through-traffic—making it the perfect location for the BAMC clubhouse.
He told himself he was just being paranoid.
Despite that, he purposely turned onto a street that led away from The Plant.
The car turned again.
It wasn’t riding his ass but stayed close enough to keep Nox in the vehicle’s headlights.
It was time to take this person on a wild goose chase. This would determine if he was being followed or if it was some random jack-wagon.
Heading north out of Rockvale, he decided to ride toward Shadow Valley in case he needed backup from his fellow officers. Since it was late, he doubted any of his BAMC brothers were at The Plant. Now that the task force had disbanded, where he lived was now pretty damn quiet and isolated.
That meant he could easily be ambushed or attacked in Rockvale, and no one would know. With what La Cosa Nostra did to the Deadly Demons the other day, it couldn’t hurt to be overly cautious.
Some of those bad actors were still upright and breathing.
Was the task force the cause of the Mafia hit? Fuck no. That all landed on the outlaw MC’s shoulders. Trying to cut out the Russos caused the Pittsburgh Mafia to cut the Demons off at the knees.
As the smoke hadn’t finished clearing yet, the feds hadn’t rescheduled the arrest teams to do the coordinated sweep. They wouldn’t until they finished compiling a list of survivors.
In the meantime, Nox had gone back to donning a uniform and doing patrol. And his supervisor was once again Axel Jamison instead of Crew. While he loved his career as a cop, he already missed working with the task force.
About ten minutes north of Rockvale, the headlights stopped blinding him. Finally able to see in his side mirrors, he noticed the car had disappeared. He slowed down but didn’t head back to The Plant. Instead, he continued on for a few more minutes to make sure whoever it was didn’t pop out from side road and begin following him again.
When it didn’t, he headed home, staying more vigilant this time. When he finally got upstairs to his apartment, he noticed he had a couple of missed calls.
One from Liyah and one from Crew.
Since he was damn sure the conversation with Liyah would take a lot longer than the one with Crew, he called the DEA agent back first.
“You rang?” Nox asked him when he picked up.
“What were you doing? Fucking?”
Nox shook his head. “Even if I was, I wouldn’t tell you. But no, I was at my weekly meeting.”
“With your girl.”
“With a group of people,” Nox corrected.
“And your girl.”
“At thirty-nine, she’s a woman. I don’t do girls.” He cleared his throat. “Unlike some people I know, I prefer women in my own generation.”
Crew chuckled. “She’s hot.”
“Did you only call to discuss Liyah?” If so, Nox was hanging up.
“I’m happy for you.”
“And I question Cabrera’s mental state for choosing to be with you. And I’m not talking about your age.”
“Maybe I’m just irresistible.”
“Said the extremely humble senior special agent. Are you three settled back into your condo?”
“Three? Oh, you’re counting the four-legged monster that shits small mountains. Yeah, but it’s a tight fit until we can find the right house. That’s not why I called.”
“I figured you didn’t call to chitchat.” Should he mention to Crew that he might have been tailed? Maybe after Nox heard whatever was so important that it deserved a phone call.
“I would’ve sent a group text, but it was easier to call everyone individually with an update.”
“Can we get to it?”
“Is she there with you? Am I interrupting?”
“No, because if she was here, I wouldn’t have called you back. I’m sure whatever you have to say could wait.”
“Damn, brother, I’ve got important shit to say.”
“Then, let’s hear it.”
“Any Demons who popped up at ERs or medical centers have been located and arrested on scene. The feds also put eyes on all the MC’s businesses that still stand. But no one has been seen. Every location is like a ghost town.”
“They went underground,” Nox murmured.
“Yeah. And you know what that means.”
“That means we won’t be serving shit. Can’t serve a warrant if there’s no one to serve it to.”
“Right.”
“Knowing there are even only a handful left out there doesn’t give me the warm fuzzies,” Nox admitted. “Do you have any numbers yet on who was taken out with either organization?”
“I don’t have the final head count. That’s going to take a bit longer and I doubt it’ll be accurate.”
“Head count? You mean dead count.”
“Exactly. But I’m more concerned with who’s breathing.”
So was Nox. Especially if either the Russos or Demons were stalking former task force members. “All right, that means we won’t be crashing biker parties any time soon.”
