He wasn’t sure how much he should tell Jamison. Especially since Magnum and the Shadows were involved. Normally he wouldn’t care if any of them got popped for doing something illegal.
But this situation was different.
Nox didn’t give a shit what had to happen to find Liyah. He only wanted her found.
More importantly, he wanted her found safe.
He needed her found safe.
Now that she was in his life, he couldn’t bear losing her.
His heart squeezed painfully.
“Yeah, it’s something for the task force and since the computers were removed, I had no way to look up the info.”
“What is it? And why would Magnum be involved?”
“Magnum has nothing to do with the Demons, I… I can’t talk about the investigation.” He hated lying to his brother, but it was in Jamison’s best interest.
“I thought the investigation was over. Especially after what the Russos pulled.”
“It is for the most part. There’s just a few loose ends that need to be dealt with for any remaining indictments and trials.”
Jamison’s steel blue eyes locked with his for a few seconds and Nox waited for his sergeant to call him out on his bullshit. Nox breathed easier when the BAMC president finally nodded, got to his feet and sighed. “All right. I’m headed home. Take care of that face. It’s not a good look while on patrol.”
Chapter Forty-Four
When his phone rang while walking out of the station, he jerked it so quickly from his pocket, it almost tumbled to the ground. Once he had a better grip, he saw it was Aaliyah’s stepmother. With his heart pounding, he put it to his ear. “Yeah.”
“They tracked both her car and her cell phone.”
She had to be talking about the Shadows. They probably knew how to hack into any program. Even the government’s. A skill that Nox and his brothers did not have and one highly illegal. “And?”
“And the phone was dumped in Rockvale, but the car wasn’t. One positive is that they did take her car, Nox, because the guys can track it. Hopefully, those assholes don’t figure that out and abandon it somewhere along the way.”
The guys. Like they were part of some “boys next door” club and not ruthless mercenaries. “It’s still on the move?”
“Yes.”
“What direction are they headed?”
“South.”
Most likely to West Virginia. “But we don’t know if she’s in the car.” It wasn’t a question but a common sense assumption.
“No.”
“Do they have eyes on it?”
“Not yet,” she answered, “but they’re catching up.”
“Magnum told you all of this?”
An irritated sigh hit his ear. “Not willingly. However, I told him that if he didn’t keep me updated that I wouldn’t… Well…” Cait cleared her throat.
“Got it.” He didn’t want to make her admit out loud that she threatened to withhold sex from her husband if he didn’t cooperate with her demands. The threat worked and that was all that mattered.
Thank fuck Cait was willing to go to that extreme to keep Nox updated.
“I appreciate the info, Cait, but I need to know where they’re headed. I need more than the direction.”
“Well… I shouldn’t tell you this because if it gets back to Magnum, he won’t be happy and then my threat won’t matter because I’ll be the one sleeping in the doghouse.”
Nox waited for her confession.
“I’m able to track his phone, so I know exactly where he is.”
Hot fucking damn. That was good news.
“Does he track your phone?” Nox asked out of curiosity.
“Since day one.”
“Well then, turnabout is fair play. He shouldn’t get pissed about it.”
“Mmm,” she murmured. “We’re talking about Magnum here. He thinks it’s okay to track me because he has made himself my protector. He’ll think I track him because I don’t trust him.”
“Do you?”
“Not since the day I met him have I not trusted him one hundred percent. And so you know, I met him when I was around fourteen. I’m now forty. Not once in all those years has he done anything to make that trust waiver.”
Damn. The man might be an outlaw biker, but he was a loyal one. Nox had to respect that about him.
“Okay,” he said, striding to his bike, “I’m going to start heading south. What do I have to do to get you to keep me updated on a regular basis?”
“Be good to Liyah and the boys.”
That was too easy. “You got it.”
“I just want her to be happy.”
“You’re not the only one.”
“And safe.”
“Ditto.”
“Will your job be at risk by getting involved?” she asked.
“It’s possible.”
“But you’re going to do it anyway.”
He answered simply, “I want her back safe and sound.”
“I like you, Nox.”
That almost made him smile. “I like you, too, Cait. I appreciate you sticking out your neck.”
“She might officially be my stepdaughter, but she’s almost the same age, so she’s more like a sister. I’d do anything for her.”
Nox grunted. He would do anything for Liyah, too. “Please keep me updated.”
