“Careful where you step and don’t touch anything,” she warned.
Even though he knew the drill, Nox nodded, grabbed Finn’s arm and tugged. They wandered around the Wolf Den’s common area, checking for any signs of Fletch or Wilder. Of course, what they were checking were the deceased.
Every time they uncovered a face, they sighed in relief when it wasn’t either of their team members.
Since there was no sign of them in the front of the clubhouse, they headed to the back where they checked every room. Even the community bathroom.
They also checked the bedroom on the end where T-Bone originally lived. They did find a body in it, but it wasn’t the former prospect. It was whoever moved into that room after T-Bone got the boot.
While they were thankful not to find Fletch or Wilder, they were also disappointed not to find Saint or T-Bone.
They ended the search by heading out back to where most of the Harleys and other vehicles were parked. The only problem was, Fletch’s borrowed bike wasn’t anything special and none of them would recognize it enough to pick it out from the lineup.
Nox wanted to be relieved, but he wasn’t since it wasn’t like Fletch not to check in. He sure as fuck hoped they hadn’t been made by either the Demons or Russos and taken by members of either organization.
When Nox’s phone vibrated in his back pocket, he quickly pulled it out, hoping to see a text from Fletch. It wasn’t. It was Crew calling him.
He braced for bad news as he lifted his phone to his ear.
“They’ve been found.”
Nox’s stomach dropped. “Alive?”
“Yeah,” Crew answered.
“Thank fuck. But you could’ve added that to your initial sentence, asshole. You know I’ve been fucking worried.”
“We’ve all been worried.”
“What happened? Where are they?” Nox asked Crew.
“It ended up they were arrested because both were armed. It also didn’t help that they couldn’t prove who they were because of being undercover and not carrying their federal IDs. Actually, neither had any ID. They also didn’t want to blow their cover at the Wolf Den while being taken into custody, just in case a Demon was watching.”
That all made sense and Nox would’ve done the same. “Have they been released yet?”
“Yes, once their identities were confirmed.”
“Where were they taken?”
“Believe it or not, the Uniontown State Police Barracks.”
“Well, shit, that was convenient.” Especially since Fletch worked for PSP.
“Yeah, so even though he isn’t based out of that location, they knew who he was immediately.”
“No surprise that he has a reputation.”
Crew chuckled. “They need a ride. Wanna pick them up since you’re ‘out and about?’”
“We don’t have enough room in the vehicle for them both. Unless Wilder wants to sit on Fletch’s lap.”
“Since they survived being shot at with AR-15s, let’s not try to get them killed in a car crash.”
“Agreed.”
“I’ll go get them.”
“Guess you and Cabrera have to temporarily move back into your condo now that Fletch and Wilder are done being Ghost and Kitten. Better go house shopping. Or farm shopping. You’ll need room for her big gray pony to run.”
Crew groaned. “For fuck’s sake. I guess I’ll need to find a place with a pool, too.”
“Happy wife, happy life. Isn’t that the saying?”
“She’s not my wife.”
“Not yet. Maybe it should be happy wife, no knife in sight.”
“I’m sure Sasha would love to stab me.”
“That’s why she’s no longer your wife.”
Crew sighed. “Are you three on your way back here?”
“Depends. I’m going to assume this morning’s sweep is no longer on today’s schedule and we need to wait to see who all survived.”
“Bingo.”
“Then no, we’re not headed back yet. Hey, do you know an Agent Dickson?”
A slight but noticeable hesitation proceeded Crew asking, “Why would I know her?”
“I didn’t say the agent was a woman—” The phone went dead. Nox pulled it from his ear to confirm.
There was his answer.
Shaking his head, he turned to Rez and Finn. Both wore huge grins.
“No surprise,” was all Rez said. “Bastard is lucky he got snipped, otherwise he’d be paying a lot more in child support.”
“I would hope most responsible men would know how to prevent accidental pregnancies.” Nox climbed into the Dodge’s passenger seat.
Finn got in the back. “Responsible is the key word there.”
“Okay, where to next?” Rez suggested, “How about showing me where that motel is?”
Finn asked, “Do you think he’s there at this hour?”
“Only one way to find out,” Rez answered, starting the engine. “Point the way, Hard Nox.”
Chapter Forty
A vehicle’s high beams bouncing off his side mirrors and straight into his eyes made him wince. Did the asshole not see the Harley in front of him?
The driver could be drunk. Or clueless. It could even be that the vehicle was stolen. No matter the reason, being blinded by headlights was annoying, even dangerous, when traveling on two wheels.
He was about to twist the throttle and see how fast his girl could go to get away from the rude jackass, but when he turned onto the main street in Rockvale, the car turned, too.
