If they lost Fletch…

Christ, he needed to stop thinking like that. Especially since his life was only beginning to turn around.

All thanks to Liyah.

“Look, let’s see if we can get our asses inside like at The Peach Pit,” he suggested to Finn and Rez.

“What are the chances that Saint was here?” Finn sounded hopeful.

“Roaches are almost impossible to kill. They’ll survive the apocalypse,” Rez said.

“Calling Saint a roach is insulting to roaches.”

Nox agreed with Finn. “Let’s go see if that boy with a badge will let us through.”

Finn’s brow furrowed. “Boy?”

Nox jerked his chin at the young guy in uniform standing sentry at the yellow tape while holding a clipboard. Apparently, he was tasked with keeping track of who came and went from the crime scene.

An easy, but boring, job.

Finn snorted. “Bet he can’t even grow chin hairs yet.”

Rez slapped Finn’s chest. “Look at that, Flame, you might finally get your chance to razzle dazzle.”

“Blaze!” Finn barked.

Nox dropped his head and shook it. After composing himself, he headed over to the rookie with his two brothers on his heels. When he got to the young Uniontown PD officer, he said, “We’re looking for two undercover federal agents that might have been inside when this all went down.”

“Not sure if all the victims were identified yet.”

Victims. The dead Demons weren’t victims. Anything that happened overnight was the consequences of their own actions.

A “fuck around and find out” situation.

Nox’s eyes flicked to his name tag. “Mind if we go in, Johnson?”

“I was given orders not to let anyone past the tape.”

Of course he was.

All three of them flashed their federal IDs at the same time, making the officer’s head jerk back in surprise. However, it didn’t seem as though Johnson was impressed. “Don’t care who you are if you aren’t on the list.”

Finn pursed his lips. “There’s a list?”

The rookie lifted his clipboard. “I can check it for your names, if you want, but I have a feeling that would waste both of our time.”

Damn.

“Last time I did this kind of rookie shit,” Finn began, “the list was to record anyone who entered and exited the scene. This isn’t some party with an exclusive VIP list.”

“Kid’s wet behind the ears,” Rez explained as if he wasn’t standing right in front of the guy. “He’s going to stick to the rules since he’s probably still in his probation period. He doesn’t want to get a spanking.”

The officer frowned. “You know I can hear you, right?”

“Ready for that razzle dazzle anytime now, Flambé,” Rez muttered under his breath.

“How about a little professional courtesy?” Nox asked the guy.

Johnson shrugged. “No problem, if your names are on the list.”

Nox lifted a finger in the air. “Give me a sec. Let me ask your supervisor.” He quickly called Ken Proctor, even though Nox knew he was not the officer’s supervisor.

When the Uniontown PD officer answered, Nox said, “Hey, brother, me, Rez and Finn are out here at the Wolf Den. I’m sure you’re aware of what went down last night. We haven’t heard from two of our task force members who were deep undercover with the Demons.” The whole time he was talking, he kept his eyes glued to Johnson’s.

“I heard about the hit. Fletch and Wilder are missing?”

“Yeah, that’s right. They were supposed to be here last night when shit hit the fan. We’re on scene to search for them but we hit a little snag.” Nox cocked an eyebrow at Proctor’s fellow Uniontown officer.

“Okay, not sure why you’re calling me?”

“Well, that little snag’s name is Johnson. He’s one of yours.”

“Aaah. Now I understand what this is about. Yeah, he’s one of our rookies. He started while I was on the task force, so I don’t know him personally.”

“You’re his supervisor, right?”

“No…” Proctor sounded confused. “Wait…”

“I thought so,” Nox hoped Proctor would pick up what he was putting down.

“I know who his supervisor is. But didn’t the feds take over the scene?”

“Looks like it, but Officer Johnson here won’t let us in, even though we’re sworn federal agents.” That temporary assignment was swiftly coming to an end, but Johnson didn’t need to know that. Until those IDs were pried from their fingers, they were using that advantage. “He says we’re not on the list.”

“All right. Give me a few. I’ll make a call to his real supervisor and get you inside.”

“Appreciate that, brother.”

“Anytime. Just remember this if I ever need a favor.”

“You got it. And don’t be too hard on him. You know how it is when you’re new… You’re afraid to break the rules.”

Proctor’s chuckle filled Nox’s ears before the call ended.

He tucked his cell phone away. “You’ll be getting a call.”

While Nox had been speaking with Proctor, a flush had crept up the rookie’s neck and into his cheeks. “I’m only doing what I was told.”
