“Rogue?”

“I shouldn’t.”

“I wouldn’t think a champion bull rider would care much about what he should do, only what he wanted to do.”

How much did he know about me? “I usually don’t care.”

“But today you do?”

“You shot at my brother.”

He sighed. “I shot at the ground. The man I was after shot at your brother.”

“You didn’t take him out after he fired on us.”

“That’s not how the game is played.”

His low voice did things to me that threatened to override my annoyance. “My brother’s life isn’t part of some game.”

“He’s also a far better shot than Brandon, and so is TJ. I wasn’t worried about them.”

I had no doubt that was true, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to accept it as an answer.

“I’d like to play a game with you.”

For some reason, those words made my cock swell. “What kind of game?”

“One that ends with me fucking you half to death.”

“I don’t want to die, not even for a great fuck.”

He laughed. “I’m dangerous, but I suppose I’ll let you survive.”

Jesus, why did that turn me on so much? I didn’t have a death wish, despite my former profession. Maybe at one time I had, but not now, and yet…

“What game? What kind of weird shit are you into?”

He huffed. “Don’t tell me you only like it safe and vanilla.”

In truth, most of the sex I’d had was unadventurous, especially with men. It had usually been in some alley or in my truck. There hadn’t been time for a lot of games, and most of the men I’d fucked were so far in the closet all they wanted was to get off and get out before they had time to think about what had happened between us.

In my fantasies, though… That was another story. “I like plenty of things, but I also have limits.”

“So do I… I think.”

Goddammit. Him saying that should not be sexy. I wasn’t going to have any control around him if we met. Who was I kidding? There was no if about it, I wasn’t going to turn down a chance to find out just how wild he could get.

“Meet me tonight at midnight,” he said.

This time I didn’t hesitate. “Where?”

“At the perimeter fence by the gravel turnoff on Green Valley Road.”

At least he wanted to meet at the ranch, not that I’d be any safer than wherever he was staying. He could lure me into his car, murder me, and be long gone before anyone could get to me.

I should say no. “Okay.”

“I knew you wanted me the moment I saw you.”

“Don’t get too far ahead of yourself, or I’ll change my answer.”

“No, you won’t.”

“Ghost?”

He’d already hung up on me.

I closed my bedroom door so slowly it looked like it wasn’t even moving. When I let go of the handle after the latch had settled into place, I stood still, not even breathing.

I didn’t hear anyone stirring. Grant and Jacob had probably thoroughly worn themselves out before falling asleep, but since Rhys always knew when I was in danger—and nine times out of ten he knew when I was about to do something incredibly stupid—I had to be on guard. We’d been apart for a long time and had only been reunited for a matter of weeks. Our connection might not be as strong as it had once been. Maybe he wouldn’t wake with a premonition that he needed to find me. I hoped to hell not. I moved down the hall at a snail’s pace.

Ghost might be more skilled than me at disappearing, but growing up, I’d learned the hard and painful way that I needed to move without making a sound if I wanted to avoid my father.

Finally, I made it to the back porch. As far as I could tell, no one had noticed me moving around.

Not daring to start my truck, which was parked far too close to Rhys’s window, I headed out to the bunkhouse and took one of the farm trucks.

When I was close to our meeting place, I saw Ghost, leaning against the fence. There was a sedan parked on the side of the road, mostly hidden by trees. A person would only notice it if they were looking for it. I put the truck in park and cut the engine, but I didn’t get out.

Was I really doing this? There was still time to run.

Like a fucking coward?

I was not a coward. I was doing this.

Ghost stood there, watching me, arms folded across his broad chest, blond hair fluttering in the light breeze.

I stepped down from the truck and shut the door. The sound echoed in the still night. I walked until I was standing right in front of him.

“Hello.” His voice was just as sexy as it had been on the phone.

“Hello.” I was used to being the one in control. The one everyone wanted. All I had to do was indicate that someone should follow me, and they knew the score. I was never nervous, never awkward, and never completely satisfied.
