I didn’t exactly show off for her but I did my thing knowing that her eyes were on me. I’d been trying to teach her about the game which was a lost cause since she couldn’t grasp even the simplest context.

I didn’t care though, as long as she was happy to just stand there and watch me just for the hell of it, just to be close, that was enough for me. I did so well that the coach praised me for being in my element, but little did he know I was in a rush to get to my girl and didn’t want to put up with his shit of having to make the same run three times until he was pleased.

I did what was fast becoming my norm and said goodbye to the guys before heading in the opposite direction where I knew she would be waiting for me.

I had to move fast because we’d almost been caught a couple nights before, but she seemed to have had the same idea because she was gone by the time I reached the place she’d been standing.

I was a little annoyed with her because I’d wanted to walk her back to her car since it was already pretty dark out, but I was too late, her car was already gone by the time I reached the parking lot. “Dammit!” I think I remember telling her not to do that.

I hopped in my truck anyway and took the route to her house. It took a while to get there and when I did her car wasn’t parked where it usually is in her driveway and there were no lights on in her house.

It was late and the streets in our town have sparse lighting. I didn’t like the idea of her being out and about on her own with her tiny self. I’ve had a few moments because of that thought and others like it, worrying that I was being a bit chauvinistic, but I put it down to what a man should feel for the woman he was falling for.

I started to retrace the route but that made no sense, I would’ve seen her on the way here since I’d followed her on the same route every night for the past few weeks. Where the hell could she be? There aren’t that many things open in this town this time of night.

I headed in the direction of the little shopping strip that was the only place that could possibly have anything open this late. I couldn’t even remember what stores were over there. Or even if it really was still open but it was worth a shot.

I drove by the pharmacy which still had its lights on and thought I saw her car in the dimly lit parking lot. My heart beat faster and I felt relief. I have no idea why I was so worried about her being out alone at night, but that protective feeling was there. Maybe because she’s so small compared to me. Like a dainty little flower.

I saw someone leaning down by the passenger side of her car when I stepped out of my truck and started to call out to her. I didn’t want to just approach her in the dark parking lot and scare her.

But when the person looked up at my approach it wasn’t her, and from the way he reacted I got a sick feeling in my gut and started running with my heart in my lungs. I ran around the car and was just in time to pull some guy off of her. “What the fuck?”

Everything happened at once. I didn’t think, just reacted and for the first time in my life came close to committing a crime. I pulled him up by his collar and threw him back away from her and into the car parked next to hers.

We struggled and though he was a big guy, he was in no way muscular let alone fit, so I had him in a headlock in no time, all the while not quite believing what was happening.

I pulled him out from between the cars and away from her as my mind raced and my heart beat me to death for a whole different reason. After securing my hold on him I looked back at her, torn.

I wanted to go to her as she struggled to sit up, but I didn’t want to leave him unattended and no way was I taking him back over there where she was. I’d left my phone in the truck since I make it a habit not to use it while driving so I looked around for help.

Just as I started to call out he tried making his escape. I throat punched him and he dropped. I knelt over him telling myself not to wrap my hands around his neck and kill. “Stay down asshole!” I said it low enough that she didn’t hear me. She’s the only reason I wasn’t giving him the beating he deserved. I’m sure she’s already beyond traumatized.
