“I usually put something in the slow cooker on the days I teach your class.”

“I hope you made a lot because if you haven’t noticed, I’m two of you and I’m still growing.”

I flexed my muscles which made her laugh. It was the first time I’d seen her laugh like that and it stopped me in my tracks. “Damn, your eyes really light up when you laugh like that. Maybe you should wear your glasses so I can at least function half the time.”

She actually started to leave the room to go get them and I stopped her. “Hey, it’s a joke come ‘ere.” I kissed her head and apologized for the poor joke. Knowing how touchous she is about her eyes I shouldn’t have said that. My first slipup.

“I love your eyes, though I don’t want you to stop wearing your glasses outside just yet. I’m not ready to share them with anyone else.” I probably sounded like a controlling ass, but I couldn’t help it. Those eyes of hers are killer.

“I’m going to cut your grass tomorrow.” We were sitting around the kitchen table enjoying the savory stew she’d made for dinner and the silence was deafening.

“You don’t have to do that. The landlord…”

“Have you seen back there? No wonder you don’t park around back, it’s like a jungle. Besides, I want to do it. You don’t happen to have an old mower laying around do you?” I said it as a joke but was surprised by her answer.

“As a matter of fact the landlord said there’s one in the old shed out back but it hasn’t been used in years.”

“Why didn’t you tell him that the grass was getting out of control?”

“He’s ninety if he’s a day, and besides, the temperature was cooling down some when I moved in so I figured the grass would die in the not too distant future.”

“You left it too long, last summer was one of the longest summers we’ve had in about a century, don’t you listen to the news?” She shrugged her shoulders and went back to eating.

I was trying to find things to talk to her about so she didn’t think I was just here to drag her off to bed but it wasn’t easy. The long sleeved top and baggy pants she wore made her look cute. Even so, I didn’t want her to see me as just another stereotypical horny teen out to get his rocks off so I was trying to pace myself.

“By the way, have you talked to the cops about that guy? Is he still locked up or did he make bail?” I almost regretted asking because she lost all the color in her face. She put her spoon down and looked at me with what I’d call a little girl lost look. Made me want to hunt him down and kill him with my bare hands.

“I might have to go to court. He’s out now, or at least he was when I called this morning after you left.” She looked down at her folded hands in her lap. I pushed my chair away from the table and reached for her, pulling her down onto my lap.

“Hey, it’s going to be okay. Does he know where you live?” She nodded her head solemnly and picked at her fingernails. I already had an idea of how to deal with this guy, which I was not about to share with her.

No doubt she’d freak if she knew I was planning to put a beat down on him. But right now my main focus was making sure she wasn’t afraid. Easier said than done since she lived all the way out here alone.

“Where’s your computer?” I tapped her hip and she looked at me questioningly. I just raised my brow until she stood and went into the bedroom to come back with an old laptop.

“How old is this thing?” I took it from her and opened it up, signing in as a guest.

“I’ve had it since college, it still works fine so I see no need to change it.” Damn is she different. Most of the girls I know wouldn’t be caught dead with anything more than a year or two old.

I went online and fast tracked an order for some CCTV security cameras. I didn’t fool myself that I’d always be here with her though I’d like to be. I’m caught between a rock and a bolder. To protect her from rumors I’m forced to leave her here on her own.

“I’ll be right back.” I left her sitting at the table to go walk around the house and check all the windows and doors to make sure they were safe. When I came back she was standing at the sink washing the dishes.

I joined her and tried not to make a complete ass of myself. I’ve never washed a dish in my life. I knew I was fucking up the drying process when I caught the look on her face.
