In moments, we have the place spic and span, and everyone’s headed out into the bright afternoon sunshine. Meanwhile, Jason’s still ruminating on groceries for tonight’s meal, but that’s fine; Mira’s coming over, and that’s all that matters to me.

We have the volunteers close up after our afternoon sermon so that Jason and I can get over to the store and start on dinner as soon as possible.

“What should we make tonight?” he asks. “I don’t know what Mira likes and doesn’t like to eat. I want to show off my culinary skills, but if I make something way too niche, she might absolutely hate it.”

I look at my best friend and shake my head.

“I think you’re overthinking it, bro. Let’s just make something simple and classic. You know like a rice dish or pasta.”

“But is that too simple?”

“We could add a little flair,” I shrug. Jason is the one who freaks out well ahead of time, worrying about all the planning. I’m the one who freaks out right before, worrying about the performance so I’m still relatively calm.

We get to the grocery store, and Jason seems to know what he wants. I follow him around as he piles groceries into the basket like we’re preparing for World War 3.

“Okay, we’ve got to get home and cook this all up, and then we both need to get cleaned up so we’re presentable for Mira.”

I chuckle.

“I don’t know about you bro, but I’m already fresh and dandy. Plus, she seems to like us no matter what we wear, so I think we’re good. Chill out, brother. It’s going to be fine.”

He merely snorts and pays, rolling his eyes. But it’s true. Jason and I are good looking guys, and no matter what we wear, it tends to look reasonable. But hey, it doesn’t hurt to get ready for the most important first date of your life, right? After all, time spent with Mira is precious, and I want things to stay on the rails no matter what we decide.

Mira

I can’t believe Jordan and Jason invited me over to dinner. I almost died right there on the spot during coffee hour because who would have guessed? Oh my god, a have a date with these men. I had to contain all of my excitement because it would have been really embarrassing if I yelled out like a lunatic right then and there.

I mean, I’m going to be in their apartment. It’s going to be just the three of us, and we’ll be all alone and able to do whatever we want.

Oh, I could faint!

There’s so much I have to get done first though. I have to find the perfect dress. Wearing what I wore to the service isn’t good enough. I want to excite them with my ensemble, and I’ve got to do hair and makeup too. I got a text confirming our date at seven, which gives me a few hours, but can perfection be achieved in this brief time frame?

I guess it’ll have to be.

Oh my god, these men are honestly going to be the death of me. Just being in their presence has me all tied up in knots and my heart pounds as my face flushes. If I’m not careful, the beans will spill which could lead to a whole host of troubles.

But how do we circumvent danger? During coffee hour, I heard them talking about threesome relationships again with that horrid Annie. I hate her, with her fiery red hair and witchy, bird-like ways. She’s shifty, and someone’s going to put two and two together at some point and realize that the three of us are doing the dirty. But still, how does the topic of Rachel and Leah keep coming up? Is it because The Handmaid’s Tale is currently streaming on TV, featuring a dystopian world where men basically share concubines?

Or are the pastors doing it in order to get some point across to me? I wouldn’t be surprised because they seem to be able to anticipate my every doubt. The thing is, I’m not sure what it is they’re trying to tell me.

Ever since the last bible study, I’ve been thinking about polyamorous relationships more. I’ve heard about then, definitely, and there was just an article in the Times covering such set-ups. Clearly, people in New York are a lot more open about their lives than the little town where I’m from. Heck, in Newberry, the townsfolk would likely die if they thought someone was in a threesome.

Yet, I’m curious. What are polyamorous relationships like? Are the people engaging in them truly happy? I do have the entire internet at my fingertips, but still, not everything on the Internet is true. There’s a lot of misinformation and disinformation that could lead me astray.

But there’s also another problem: is what Jason, Jordan, and I have a relationship? Or is it a little bit of fun that’ll be over in no time? A slip of the norm, if you will. We haven’t spoken about our relationship status, so really, we could be anything. A triad. A dyad with one extra person attached. A vee with me at the center. Who knows?
