He’d also spent long periods of time at the lake, just to see if he could make sense of who Amelia saw.

Did she even see anyone?

Was this all a ruse to get the attention of the pack?

Wolfe hadn’t voiced his concerns with the club yet, but they had a church meeting in a couple of days, and he couldn’t help but wonder if he brought it up as a possibility.

Once he voiced his opinion, anything he had with Amelia would be over. If she ever found out, and he couldn’t ask his prez to keep his opinions of her to himself.

He just didn’t get it.

She was a lovely, kind, beautiful woman, but his theory was the only one to make sense. Nothing and no one got past him and the club.

Why this long?

Why now?

Wolfe stopped and looked out across the vast forest. No one would ever know that a shifter town existed in amongst the forest. Hidden from everyone.

Gritting his teeth, he tried not to think about Amelia, but it was impossible. Each time he did, he got hard.

Was she doing this for attention?

After climbing on his bike, he headed back toward town. His head wasn’t any clearer.

Val had given her a few days off, and rather than head back to the clubhouse, he made his way toward Amelia’s apartment building. He climbed off his bike and went to her door, pressing the button.

There was a beep, allowing him up, and he headed inside, being sure to close the door behind him.

He arrived at her apartment door seconds later, and Enzo was there, already waiting, a bag on his shoulder. Enzo had been knitting.

“You here to relieve me?” Enzo asked.

“Yeah. How has she been?”

“Fine. The dogs have been a bit growly, but I put that down to me being there. You know how they are.” Enzo shrugged.

Wolfe found that rather strange, as the dogs never reacted to him.

“Sure. Sure.”

“Dude, what’s up?” Enzo asked.

“Nothing.”

“Any news?”

“I don’t know. I haven’t had an update.” Wolfe gripped the back of his neck. “I took a ride out.”

“You think that is wise?”

“I had to, you know.” He shrugged.

Enzo frowned. “What’s up, man? You’re being weird.”

“Nothing’s up.” He forced a smile to his lips and smacked his club brother on the back. See you tomorrow.”

Enzo agreed and left.

After closing Amelia’s apartment door, Wolfe walked into the main living room, seeing Rascal and Buster.

The two dogs stared at him, and it surprised him that they continued to growl at him. That had never happened before.

“What is with you two today?” Amelia asked, stepping out of the kitchen. She stopped as she saw him. “Wolfe!”

He braced himself as she ran toward him, wrapping her arms around him and kissing him.

“I missed you,” she said.

Wolfe couldn’t help but grab her curvy ass. “I missed you too.”

His dick wanted her, and the truth was, Wolfe wanted her, but he couldn’t help but have his suspicions about her.

Amelia stepped out of the bedroom the following day to find Wolfe glaring at the dogs. They had been growling like that for the past couple of hours, and she didn’t know how to get them to stop.

“I think they need a walk,” Amelia said.

“Out in the forest?”

“Yeah, that seems to be the best place to take them.”

There was something odd about Wolfe, and she couldn’t exactly put her finger on it. After tucking some hair behind her ear, she rubbed her hands down her sides and waited.

“We better take them out for a walk,” Wolfe said, getting to his feet.

“Is everything okay?” Amelia asked.

“What?”

“I don’t know. You seem a little … distant?”

“Yeah, it’s nothing. You don’t have to worry about anything.”

“Oh, yeah, of course, because telling me not to worry is always so easy,” she said, trying to tease, but Wolfe wasn’t playing along.

Amelia frowned.

When he left her this morning, he’d been kissing her, attentive, and everything she dreamed about and kind of yearned for. This guy wasn’t the man who had left her. This was like someone different. Someone she didn’t even know, someone she hadn’t been screwing the past week.

Wolfe hadn’t even made a move to touch her, kiss her, make love, or even fuck her.

He’s bored.

Amelia grabbed her jacket. Even though it was warm outside, she didn’t want to run the risk of there being caught in the rain.

She clapped her hands and called out for dogs.

Rascal and Buster bounded over to her, and she laughed, stroking them behind the ears. She adored her dogs. They were such good boys.

Wolfe made his way to the door first, and Amelia followed behind him. This was … odd.

He was behaving like a complete stranger and not the man she’d been with. Was this what happened?

Was Wolfe bored with her?

Did he want another woman?

A more socially acceptable woman?

It wasn’t lost on her that he kept his distance from her whenever they were near anyone else. Just the other day, they’d been holding hands, and as soon as one of the pack was near, he’d let her go.
