“It says that?” he asks and scratches the back of his head making his shirt rise up and giving me a perfect view of his low abs. “I just thought it was a simple, don’t talk about Fight Club sort of thing.”

“Uh, no, not simple, and I would never talk about you anyway like that, but whatever.”

“How would I know?” He pulls away from me, I can’t see his eyes because of his sunglasses but I imagine they’re piercing. “I only knew you for a few hours and while I don’t make snap judgements, you were nothing but a stranger.”

Nothing. I was nothing.

“Yeah, well, now that we got that all cleared up.” I move as far away from him as possible. “I’m going to get changed.”

The room’s chilly, the mood is anything but relaxed.

“Fine.” It comes out snappy like we just got in a couple’s fight, but you have to be a couple for that to be real and we’re just like he said.

Strangers.

Nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

I take a deep breath and look toward my hanging garment bag. I have around six dresses to choose from. One of them is a form-fitting black number with a plunging neckline down the front and back, it creates a really cool V effect but shows a lot of boob.

I think of Killian.

And grab the dress.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Killian

“So,” Dustin says as he adjusts his black silk tie and tucks his black shirt into his black pants and grabs his black jacket. “How do I look?”

“Like you’re going to an expensive funeral where they’ll most likely have bottle service and Oscar styled gift bags, why?”

He shoves his black glasses up his nose. “I thought I looked professional.”

“Or like you could be cast in John Wick Five, but sure.” I pat him on the back. “Anything I need to know about for tonight other than the surprise song I’m being forced to sing for the bride?”

“Oh!” Dustin snaps his fingers directly in front of my face and grabs his iPad, ah the scrolling again, what a treat. “Yes, so she saw this TikTok where this musician took different words about love and did a really cool compilation. Addison called them her manifesting words. Kind of has a ring to it and—” He curses. “You’re going to slap the iPad out of my hands, aren’t you?”

“Was thinking about it.”

Dustin takes a step back while I check my watch.

“I’m doing it on my terms, I’ll glance at the words but if she mentions anything about wheat grass, diamonds, or true love, I’m out.”

Dustin hands me the iPad. “Well, I mean she is getting married.”

I stare down at the words and nearly choke. “Forever, Focus, Finally, Flourish, Fortunate, Forged, Faithful—” I pause. “Fluffy?”

“Apparently that’s the new rescue cat they took in, kind of like her little kitten and—”

“Fuck me.” I groan.

“Well, I think you could probably fit the F word in there since it does seem to be a theme but there will be children present and… okay I’m done talking now. I’ll just let you stare at the screen a little bit longer—this is the new iPad, not the one you smashed last year so just, tread carefully. I’m only allotted one company device that’s not my phone and I just downloaded—never mind, you don’t care.”

“Did it have to do with dinosaurs?”

HIs face lights up.

I shove the iPad against his chest. “Then no, I really don’t care, and what the hell is taking Scarlett so long?”

I check my watch again. We’ve been waiting in the main restaurant lobby for what seems like ten years. Then again, I’m with Dustin. Time just seems to stop and not in a magical way where you want to spend the rest of your minutes in that moment, but in a way where you dream about root canals and that’s your happy moment.

Dustin looks at his watch then glances up at the doors and does a double take, those damn glasses slip off his nose, he doesn’t even shove them back up this time. Son of a bitch someone will actually die today.

Scarlett walks through in what I can only describe as the most man-eating sexiest dress alive. Her heels are red, God bless her, and I see so much cleavage and curves that I can’t remember how to use my hands or swallow, let alone give her a compliment.

Her hair’s straightened down her back and her makeup is subtle yet gorgeous with a light purple shadow and a nude lip. Is she wearing fake eyelashes or are those real?

She licks her lips and adjusts the small silver chain dangling between her breasts. “Sorry, forgot my purse and then I forgot earrings and then I had to pee and why is Dustin pale?” She waves her hand in front of his face, then snaps her fingers. His glasses fall to the ground, he hurriedly grabs them and puts them back on and tilts his head.
