“Yes, sir.”

“Good. Now grab your shit. I’m taking you home. Tomorrow, your ass is going to be in school, and you’re going to stay there until the end.”

Doom had to give the kid credit when Blue shook his head. “I’m not going—”

The next second, the kid was staring up at the ceiling with Wizard’s boot on his chest.

“What did you fucking say?”

Blue grabbed Wizard’s foot as he tried to struggle out from under it. “I’m not going back. I hate it there!”

“You’re going back. You want those punks to know they won? You never give a fucking win without making fuckers like that pay with their own blood.”

“I can’t take them all on!” Blue stopped struggling under Wizard’s pitiless regard.

Removing his boot, Wizard grabbed Blue by the front of his shirt and lifted him to his feet. Then, moving around him, he took the chair to stare intently at the teenager. “Did Jesus explain how to become a Last Rider?”

Blue looked toward where Jesus was uncomfortably standing.

“We hadn’t gotten that far yet,” Jesus answered for him.

Wizard gave Blue an unamused smile. “Then let me enlighten you.” He took out his cell phone. After a couple of swipes of his finger, he turned the phone toward Blue. “You have to take on six of the original members, one at a time. Take your pick.”

Staring at the picture that Wizard was showing him, Blue turned pale.

“That’s what I thought.” Wizard lay the phone down on the desk. “How did you think you became a Last Rider if you can’t even take on five punk-ass bitches?”

Blue gave Jesus a pleading glance.

“Don’t look at Jesus to save you. The only one who can save your ass in this room is me. You know why?”

“No.”

Doom saw the kid was practically shaking in fear.

“Because I’m the president of The Last Riders, and when I say something, I can back it up without asking for any help from them. I’ve earned that honor by being willing to spill my fucking blood and endure any pain for The Last Riders. I benefit the club with my military experience.” Wizard then narrowed his eyes on the boy. “Now, listen to me closely… You still want to become a Last Rider?”

“I do.”

“You sure about that?”

“Yes.”

“How are you going to earn the right to wear a Last Rider jacket?”

“By going back to school.”

Wizard gave him a curt nod. “All the brothers can fight. How are you planning on benefiting the club? There are no free rides here.”

The kid looked confused, as if he didn’t know what to say. Wizard helped him out.

“Doom is Sergeant at Arms. It’s his job to make sure the club has everything we need. Doom, what does the club need?”

“Ever since Train and Evie moved to Kentucky, our chapter has been short someone with medical experience. Evie was a combat nurse, and Train was a military medic. Having a doctor in our ranks would one-up us from the other chapter.”

“You want me to become a doctor?”

Doom didn’t give Blue false hope. “You’d still have to fight for a spot after you graduate from medical school.”

Blue didn’t seem happy with the stipulation. “I’d have to wait until then?”

“You need Wizard to show you the picture again? You wouldn’t make it past one of the original members, much less take on six. I did two tours in the military, had been in more bar fights overseas than I can remember, and worked five years as a captain of a commercial fishing boat. The men who work on those boats work hard and play harder. I wouldn’t have lasted two fucking seconds if I couldn’t beat the shit out of any man on my boat.” Doom gave Blue a twisted smile. “I still wasn’t prepared to take them on. I did win the right to become a member, but I had three cracked ribs, a broken nose, jaw, and a fractured arm when it was over. You have to withstand a beating that would maim or kill another man. They want to know, when you go to battle, you can depend on the man standing next to you to protect you if you go down. How can you protect anyone else if you can’t protect yourself first? Defeat isn’t in The Last Riders’ vocabulary. When we go to battle, the last one standing will be a Last Rider.”

From the kid’s expression, Doom saw he was getting a grasp on what it would take to be a member of the club.

“You want to change your answer about joining?” Wizard asked.

“No.”

Blue’s mutinous expression mirrored his sister’s, Doom thought.

“Then guess what you need to do,” Wizard stated.

“Go back to school.”

“Cool. We’re in agreement.” Wizard leaned back in the chair. “Then grab your shit. Buck and Jesus will drive you home. Your ass will be at school in the morning, and when the brothers and I pick you up after school, be the first one out. I want you to show me who’s been using your ass as a bobbing apple in the toilets. We’re not going to fight any battles for you, but since you’re considering becoming a doctor to protect the brothers’ health, the least we can do is level the playing field until Buck and Jesus can teach you how to take them on and give them a taste of their own piss.”
