I dip my cookie into my milk, look at him, and pop a bite into my mouth. His tongue sneaks out and traces his top lip, and I get the urge to lean forward and suck it.

“Sometimes you act like you’re twelve. It’s sort of adorable.”

When I finish chewing, I ask, “Only sort of?” And then add, “Eh. I didn’t have much of a childhood. Might as well make up for it now.”

Hayden gets a sad curve to his lips and his eyes get serious.

“Wait. No. Why are you getting weird? I told you I have zero regrets. I am where I am because of my past. Now are we watching this fucking movie, or what?”

“You’re the one who keeps talking,” Hayden replies, then picks up a cookie and holds it out to me. I lean forward and take a bite.

“Thanks, boo.” Then, I wink at him, pay attention to the TV, and settle in.

When the movie ends, I turn to look at Hayden. He’s leaning forward, legs crossed, elbows on his knees with a big-ass smile on his face. Jesus, he’s cute as fuck.

I use the remote to turn off the TV and lie back against the pillows. “So, we have Roger on Friday night, right? Tell me about Roger.”

I don’t know why I’m so interested in Hayden’s sex life. It’s not as if I don’t have my own. But the truth is, I can’t look at him and imagine not wanting to fuck the hell out of him, so the whole shit with Lance has me confounded. How could he not want Hayden naked every night?

Hayden moves the half-empty plate to the nightstand before lying back. “What’s to tell? He’s a yoga instructor for fuck’s sake. And he’s beautiful. But…”

“No. No, no, no no. There will be no buts here unless we’re talking about one with two t’s and you’re going into detail about what you want to do with it. Tell me, you’re not letting that shit with Lance get to you, right? There’s nothing wrong with hooking up if you want to.” He’s made it perfectly clear that he wants Roger. He shouldn’t let his ex, who he doesn’t love, get in the way with that.

“No.” He shakes his head. “I’m…kind of…?”

“Ugh.” I drop my head back and look at the ceiling. What the fuck is wrong with people? “Most people are out for themselves in this world, Hayden. It’s very rare you’ll meet someone who really gives a shit and puts others first. Lance is thinking about Lance, and you need to think about you. If that means you’re not ready to say good-bye to Lance—”

“No. That’s not it at all.”

“Then if you want to fuck, fuck. If you want a goddamned blowjob, get a blowjob.” If he decides he doesn’t want those things for himself, that’s okay, but he shouldn’t make that decision because of Lance.

“Who doesn’t want a blowjob?” he asks with a smile.

“Truth.”

He sighs. Burrows himself under my blanket. “You’re right…I know you’re right.”

But he’s still questioning it. I know he is. “What do you do?” he asks.

“Huh?”

“Earlier. You said you noticed I bake when I need to unwind. What do you do?” His eyes flutter.

“Hmm…” I roll onto my side to face him. He’s on his side as well, and we’re both lying here, watching each other. “Besides give amazing head? I’m kind of a geek. I’m obsessed with graffiti art, which you could probably tell from my living room walls. I also play around drawing my own comics. Would love to do a graphic novel sometime.” Which will likely never happen, but hell, it’s a good fucking dream.

“No shit?” Hayden asks.

“No shit. But that’s just kind of there. It’s not something I think about all the time. I love tattooing. It’s a stress release in itself. You should let me give you some ink sometime.”

“Um, that will likely be a no.”

“You’re not fun.”

“Not true. I’m a whole lot of fun.” He winks.

“Stop flirting with me. I swear it’s like I can hardly keep you off of me.…Or…you know, the other way around.”

“I didn’t expect this,” Hayden says and my brows pull together.

“Didn’t expect what?”

“I don’t know. The friendship. Lying in bed, eating cookies, watching movies and stuff like that. My new wingman. You’ve…helped. Things were over with me and Lance a long time ago, but it’s still been kind of fucked the past few weeks. You’ve helped make things feel a little easier. Thank you for that.”

“Everyone should have someone in their corner.” Not that I think I’m the only person there for Hayden because I know I’m not. And also not that I think everyone believes what I do because they don’t. Like I told him earlier, most people are out for themselves, but that’s not the person I want to be.
