And then there was that sneaky smile. When they were around other people, Cole was quiet and reserved. It was like he hid behind this stone wall that no one could climb over.

Except for JB.

He could get Cole smiling and even laughing, and that was a high all on its own. Cole had the best laugh. A deep and throaty kind of laugh that reached out and grabbed him by the dick.

So, of course, he found himself temporarily living with an incredibly hot guy who had a brilliant mind and a dry sense of humor. Oh, and of course, he was straight.

JB had begun to think that Rowe only hired men who were gay or bi. But no, he had to send JB the one guy on his roster who was straight.

Rowe clearly hated him. He’d thought they’d made some nice progress over the past few years. They skyped on occasion, catching up and having a few laughs, but Rowe was probably still trying to get him back for kissing Noah.

“Bastard,” JB muttered under his breath.

There was a soft knock on the doorframe, and JB popped his head up to see Cole standing in the open doorway, a worried expression on his face. “Should I come back?”

“Oh! Hey! No, come on in.” JB eagerly waved him in.

Cole took one step forward but continued to linger in the open doorway. “You looked busy and not very happy about it. I was just stopping by. I don’t want to interrupt.” He continued to look as if he were prepared to bolt if JB so much as sneezed.

“Nah. It’s good. I was looking over some reports on the computer.” He motioned toward the screen. “Easily the most boring part of my day. What are you up to?”

Cole shrugged. “Not much. I’m still digging around on Dillinger, but Gidget booted me off the computer for a little while. Told me that I needed to get some sun. That this is supposed to be a vacation.”

JB laughed. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone make the word ‘vacation’ sound like a jail sentence.”

Cole winced and shoved a hand through his hair as he kept his eyes locked on the ground. How anyone that big could look as adorable as Cole was absolutely beyond JB. “Sorry. I don’t mean for it to. I’m really enjoying my time here.”

JB easily waved him off. “It’s okay. I don’t know of many people who would choose a Texas cattle ranch as a vacation spot. I’m more the white sandy beach and umbrella drinks kind of guy when it comes to vacation.”

Cole jerked, one eyebrow quirking as he returned his piercing gaze to JB. “Really? I didn’t think you could stand being still on vacation.”

JB chuckled. “Oh, I can be the king of sloth when it comes to vacation. Lots of lounging, sleeping, and eating. I work hard seven days a week. When it’s vacation time, I want to be pampered with as little moving as possible.”

A slow, thoughtful look crossed Cole’s face, and JB was suddenly consumed with the need to kiss those very soft-looking lips. “Yeah, I think I like your idea of vacation. Secluded beach, soft breeze, and a nice hammock in the shade sounds good.”

Oh, they needed to start talking about something else, because JB’s sex-starved body was starting to conjure up images of Cole in nothing but tiny red bikini briefs while they shared that hammock in the shade. He was kissing that perfect mouth while his hand slid down that beautiful chest to stroke—

“What—” JB started, but his voice came out rough and broken, forcing him to clear his throat and try again. “What are your plans for the day?”

“I was hoping to work for a while, but Gidget says they don’t need me right now. I don’t like leaving my coworkers overloaded when I can easily help with things. I thought I’d pop in and see if you’d heard from the vet yet about those cows.”

Yep, talk of dead cows was a great way to kill a hard-on.

“Nope. Old Doc Amber hasn’t called yet, but I’m expecting to hear from her today.”

Cole’s expression crinkled up, and it was all JB could do not to laugh. “Old Doc Amber?” he repeated slowly.

“Dr. Amber Masterson. We love to tease her. She took over the practice from Dr. Arnold Brown when he retired a few years ago. He had to have been about a hundred and twenty when he retired, and we liked to call him Old Doc Brown.”

Cole rolled his eyes, but JB could clearly see the start of a smile on his lips. He had the man, and he fucking loved it.

“You’re pulling my leg,” Cole groaned.

“No! I’m serious. We loved teasing him about his time machine.” Cole started chuckling at last and JB knew he’d won. “When Amber took over, we started calling her Doc Amber or Old Doc Amber.”
