Ash’s eyes went wide. “You slept with Rush?”

“Why would it matter if he slept with Rush?” Beau asked. Cam kept his mouth shut, which I appreciated.

Immediately, my mind went to the conversation in Temecula with Livings and his friends. My eyes shot around to see if anyone was listening or had heard our conversation.

I didn’t hide who I was. Fuck anyone who had a problem with me. It has taken me a while to feel comfortable in my skin, and I sure as shit didn’t plan to change that. But being the only out supercross racer wasn’t easy because it wasn’t the most…liberal of places you could choose to be, so while I was proud, I also paid attention to my surroundings.

I said, “Me detects a hint of jealousy again.” I didn’t know what it was about Lincoln that got under my skin. He’d wormed his way there and had yet to leave. It wasn’t as if I was in love with him…but I liked him. There was no doubting that. I wanted more of him.

“What? No. I wasn’t talking about Sawyer when I mentioned the ice cream. I was just saying I promised you a treat, and I thought this was a good one too.” He held his arms out.

“You? I thought you said—”

“Not me! I meant how I dressed, which you knew, and I also hate you.”

I winked. “Sure you do.”

“You have the fastest qualifying time so far,” Cam said, I was pretty sure to change the subject. Cam was good about that.

“Of course I do.” Glancing around, I noticed the area was beginning to empty out a bit. “Speaking of…I need to get going before my mechanic hunts me down. You guys didn’t have any problems getting into the pits or anything?”

“Nah, it’s good,” Ash replied.

“I considered pom-poms, but then I thought that might be a bit much…?” Linc teased. He was trying to get things back to normal, that much was obvious, but I couldn’t really understand why things weren’t normal to begin with. We were having sex, we liked having sex, he thought we should stop, and then he got weird.

“Yeah, I think so. But I’m free after the race if you wanna give me a private performance.”

“Rush! Let’s go!” my mechanic called from behind me.

“On that note, wish me luck out there.” I winked at them and walked away. It was time to block everything out of my mind except my race. The only thing that mattered was it would be mine.

The moment I rounded the first corner, I knew I had the holeshot. My heart raced as fast as my bike did. It was as if the bike electrified me, as if every time I pulled the throttle, my insides lit up in the best way. Riding represented what it was like to feel alive, and I savored that feeling each and every time I was on a dirt bike.

I made my first moto around the track, looking up to see the sign my trainer held up for me as I did so.

Inside line.

I was still in first, but he thought the inside line would be better for me, and judging by the ruts in the track, he was right. With a quick glance over my shoulder, I took the next turn, holding my inside leg out for balance as I did so. There was a bike right behind me, but I had enough time to ease my way in, effectively cutting him off and getting into the natural inside groove in the track that my trainer mentioned.

A few laps in, I began to feel the dull ache in my arms and hands. Arm pump was a big problem for riders. It took a lot of strength and stamina to ride like this, and it sure as hell took a lot to hold on to a massive bike while it vibrated with energy.

The biggest, most fun jump on the track was quickly approaching. I’d gotten a shit ton of air each and every time I’d jumped it during the race so far. I also managed to make up time, extending my lead through the rhythm section before it.

I pulled the throttle, pushed harder, worked my way into the jump, but the moment my bike left the ground, I knew I’d fucked up. My wheel had gone off the jump wrong, and as soon as I went through the air, I realized I was doing so without my bike beneath me.

There was a loud thud and a crunch when I hit the ground, and pain ripped through my left shoulder and back. My bike came down on top of me, and that was the last thing I remembered before my world went black.

CHAPTER FIVE

Lincoln

Linc didn’t have to become my friend…but he did. That tells me a lot about the kind of guy he is. ~ Trey
