“Call him out,” Brick demanded. “You don’t get her until he shows.”
Dog bayed from the car. One long howl letting me know she had a scent. Only, now was not the time to be hunting raccoons. Blossom sucked in a breath, but I stepped back into her, a signal for her to keep quiet.
“What’s that?”
“My dog,” I told him. “Likes to hunt.”
Another bay, more insistent this time. I heard what I thought was Dog scrambling out of the back-seat window. Clutch hollered, swearing loudly, and I was sure I was right.
“Fuckin’ bitch just scratched my paint job all to shit and back. Didn’t she?” I could hear the pained note in Clutch’s voice over the radio. He was in the Bronco, but I knew he wouldn’t want to get out and look.
I shrugged. “Maybe not.”
Several long bays as Dog moved through the wooded area around the field.
“Uh, Walker?” Wylde’s fingers flew over the keyboard as he spoke. Keys clicked in rapid fire. “You’re dog’s on the hunt.” It was hard not to respond directly to Wylde. I wasn’t ready for Winston to know my whole team was out there. Likely Bruce was monitoring Winston just like Wylde was us. He might even have more men out there we didn’t know about.
I had to bite back a groan. “Fuckin’ dog.”
“I know she likes to hunt,” Clutch shot me an annoyed look. “But now? Really?”
“Guys, she’s not hunting coons.” That from Rage.
Then Dog struck. Her baying turned into a choppy bark as she treed her target. Her barks were snarls and vicious noises I’d never heard from her before. She got aggressive when presented with a kill, but never like this.
“Got him!” Wylde and Rage sounded on the radio over top of each other.
“Good shot?” Brick asked, never taking his eyes off an obviously confused Winston.
“Yep.” Shooter spoke this time.
“Take it.” Brick commanded.
A single shot rang out, followed by a sharp cry and a loud thump. Then Dog attacked. There was a high-pitched yelp, then a man screaming.
“Get this fuckin’ dog off me! Fuck!”
“Call her off, Walker,” Brick said calmly.
I put my thumb and forefinger in my mouth and whistled loudly. Dog immediately ceased and bounded from the woods straight to me, sitting at my feet. Blood covered her muzzle and dripped from her mouth.
“He’s it, Brick,” Wylde said. “There’re no more.”
“Are you fuckin’ kiddin’ me?” Brick chuckled. “You were tryin’ to take on the Iron Tzars with only one guy?” He shook his head. “You really are a stupidass motherfucker.”
“What is this? We had a deal!”
“Why?” Blossom stepped beside me. I groaned, trying to keep myself between her and Winston. He still had a gun in his hand, and I was acutely aware he could easily shoot her. “Why did you want me back?”
“Because you’re my ticket to the governor’s mansion.”
“Why? Because Glen wanted me?”
“Yes. And you’re going to do what I tell you. Now, come here.”
Blossom shook her head and moved closer to me, wrapping her arms around my waist. “No. I’m staying with Walker.”
“Little bitch,” he muttered. “Just like your mother.”
“You had her killed. Didn’t you?” Blossom’s voice was so soft I nearly didn’t hear her, but Winston did.
He snorted. “Of course, I did. She refused to give me any more money to fund my political ambitions. So I had her killed, made it look like an accident, and got her life insurance.”
“But you couldn’t get the money my father left her.”
Winston scowled. “Not for lack of trying. How can one man control his money from the fucking grave? Now. You’re going to come with me. And you’re going to give me access to everything you have, or I’ll have every single one of these fuckers in this club slaughtered.”
“Yep.” I raised an eyebrow. “He really is a stupidass motherfucker, Brick.”
“Wylde. Are you certain there are no more people out there?”
“Yep. Also, the only communication is between our team and Winston and Bruce. Cells are blocked. No radio or satellite communication. No listening devices of any kind.”
“You mean to tell me, this fucker came out here to meet with a motorcycle club without any form of backup other than one dumbass?”
“You didn’t think you’d need backup. Did you?” Blossom spoke softly to her stepfather. “You thought you could simply buy them off.”
“Why would I need backup?” He scoffed. “You’re nothing to them! Just give her to me, and I’ll forget about Bruce. No one needs to know about him.”
“You made an assumption you shouldn’t have,” I said, wanting to pound this motherfucker into the ground. God knew he deserved it, but with Blossom here that wasn’t happening. “Blossom means everything to me.”
“To us,” Brick amended. “She’s Walker’s woman. Which means she’s one of us. We protect our family to the death. Take her away, Walker.”
I scooped up Blossom and took her back to the cage. Clutch walked with us, knowing we needed to get her out of here. Without further comment, I heard Brick cock his sidearm, then he shot Winston.
