Well, damn. Viggo had been working to take care of me long before I ever came into existence. The thought both warmed my heart and brought me relief. In this economy, I was barely able to take care of myself.

“That’s good to hear, because with this hotel expense, yet another of my credit cards will be maxed out. Last night, I paid a shitload of money at this restaurant for a dinner date that-”

“Dinner date,” Viggo repeated in a biting tone, his eyes darkening as he spoke. “Are you courting someone else?” Jealousy and anger were painted across his face, and it was hot as hell. No one had ever been jealous over me.

“Not exactly. I was saying I had to pay for a date that never happened. The guy stood me up.”

Viggo’s jaw unclenched when he replied, “It is lucky for him. If another man tried to win your heart, I would remove his.” There was no hesitation in his voice.

Holy shit, he’s serious. He would kill a man over me? Why did that just give me a chub? Something is wrong with me. Maybe that’s why I’m soulmates with a vampire; I’m too fucked up in the head to be with another human.

“Can you explain our bond to me again? I’m not sure I completely understand.”

“Of course. And please don’t feel bad; humankind does not share this kind of bond within its species. Two people can fall in love and believe that they are soulmates, but they do not share the same relationship as vampires or other paranormal beings.”

I lifted my hands in front of my chest. “Hold up. Other paranormal beings?”

“Oh yes, there are many; witches, wizards, and shifters, just to name a few.”

“But…how?” I had so many questions but was unsure how to address them.

Viggo gave me a kind smile and took my hand as he explained, “We are born into this world, just like the countless species of animals, or different types of humans with varying skin colors and ethnicities. Many paranormal species keep their identities secret for protection, but you probably interact with them every day.”

I didn’t know how to respond to this information, so I just nodded for him to continue.

“Different beings have different properties. Some are unfortunate but necessary, like vampires’ need for drinking blood. But others are wonderful, like our immortality, and our enhanced strength and senses. But the most amazing gift bestowed onto us is the gift of soulmates. For our kind, deep, unbreakable bonds are forged by Fate herself.

“She chooses our perfect match; our perfect complement, and the other half of our soul. Our fated mates are everything we need. Once we find our match, we will never pine for another. I will be devoted to you for eternity. My love and desire for you will only grow over time.”

My mouth went dry. It was the type of love I had always dreamed about, but never believed actually existed. I couldn’t even get Josh to show up for a date, and now Viggo wanted to keep me forever? Sure, the first guy interested in commitment was a blood sucking monster, but I’d met (and slept with) worse.

He watched with dark eyes as I licked my lips to inform him, “I’m human,” as if the fact wasn’t obvious. “You said humans don’t have that kind of bond.”

“With other humans,” he corrected gently. “But Fate has seen our hearts, and that they were made for one another. You heard my cry and relieved my suffering. You are everything to me; my whole world, and I will spend every moment of my future loving you the way you deserve.”

I swallowed hard as my heart raced out of control. It all sounded too good to be true, and there was one fact suggesting it was. “My future isn’t as long as yours.” I had another sixty years tops - and that was if I ate right and exercised, which I didn’t.

“When our bond is consummated, our lifelines will be linked. We cannot survive without one another. You will inherit my properties of immortality and immunity to disease. You will not receive my strength and resilience, but I will protect you.”

I heard everything he said, but my mind was still clinging to consummate. The thought of having sex with the gorgeous man was stealing all of my brain power. “So, we will be bonded forever after we…” I was too turned on to finish my sentence.

Viggo cupped my cheek with his hand and stroked his thumb across my skin. “Yes. After I make love to your beautiful body, you will be mine forever.” That sent my chub to full, throbbing mast, but Viggo appeared less than thrilled. Sadness swam in his eyes.

“That’s not what you want?” I asked, and he recoiled as if I slapped him.
