Viggo thought for a moment before replying, “I would like to visit my friend Remy.”

I was a little bummed out that he didn’t want to spend some time alone, but I also understood; Viggo had been away from everyone for so long. He had no family he could count on. He only had one person (besides me) in his life who was important to him, and I was sure he missed him very much.

“Okay,” I agreed with a smile. “Let’s go get my car and we’ll find him.”

Chapter Five

Viggo

“Are you sure you don’t mind?” I asked Skyler as he drove down the road. It was the third time the question crossed my lips since we left the hotel, which was an interesting experience.

When we returned our key, the clerk said we owed money for another night’s stay, since we failed to leave before check-out time. I worried that Skyler would be cross with me. Overstaying was my fault; I was unaware of the rule, and I still had no money to cover the cost.

But my beloved merely shrugged and handed over another credit card, telling the clerk it did not matter because he had a ‘rich ass boyfriend’. He then announced loudly that we would return to the hotel later, and that we would ‘fuck on every surface to get our money’s worth’. I managed to piece together his meaning, and it was perhaps one of the proudest moments of my life. Even if his words were only a bluff, they were exhilarating to think about.

Once we left The Walton, we made the short walk back to the cemetery to retrieve Skyler’s car. It was a magnificent machine. It roared to life with only a small metal key, and Skyler made controlling the vehicle look easy as he guided it through the streets.

He was even able to use his intelligent-phone to navigate our way to Remy’s house. I knew his address, as I had visited him many times, but I did not know the road system. Skyler typed in the information and got step by step instructions for the drive, which was a little less than an hour. I couldn’t believe how far technology had come.

Even so, I felt guilty that I couldn’t provide transportation. Ordinarily, I would travel on foot, moving even more quickly than his car. If I were at full strength, I could easily carry my beloved anywhere. But even though I had fed on his blood, it was not enough to fuel me fully. I needed to consume more, which is the main reason why I requested to visit Remy.

“Of course I don’t mind,” Skyler insisted. He reached over and placed his hand on my thigh, and I was quick to lace our fingers together. “I know you’re excited to see your friend again.”

“I’m very much looking forward to seeing him, but I must admit there is more to this visit.”

“What do you mean?”

I sighed and told him, “I must feed. I couldn't take everything I needed from your body, or it would have…” I couldn't even speak the words; they were too terrible to think about.

But Skyler was very intelligent. “You said vampires helped police officers dispose of criminals.” He understood that the amount of blood I needed would end a person's life. I was grateful his voice held no contempt. “How often do you have to feed?”

“Usually a few times a week. But because I went so long without nourishment, it will take a large amount of blood to quench my thirst.”

“I'm sorry you're thirsty.” He let loose of my hand to lift his wrist in offering. “My blood has probably replenished a little if you need a snack.”

My fangs tingled at the offer, but I would not risk harming my beloved. Instead, I kissed his forearm and told him, “Fate has blessed me with such a remarkable man. Thank you, but I will be fine until we reach Remy.”

“You need him to help you find your food supply,” he concluded wisely. It had been a long time, and I wasn’t sure how things worked now.

I nodded. “I need his help with something else as well. When I feed, I will go alone.” I didn’t want my mate to see me that way. I never wanted to frighten him. “I trust Remy to keep you safe while I am gone.”

Skyler smirked as he looked over at me. “I’ve made it a long time without a babysitter. I’m sure I’ll survive.”

“It’s not because I doubt you,” I replied quickly, hoping I didn’t offend him. “I just need to make sure you are protected.” Our bond commanded it. Because we hadn’t sealed our bond, my need to shield him was even more heightened. Leaving his side, even just long enough to feed, would be difficult. “Please grant me this.”
