Matty scoffed. “Dude is a drama queen. Literally.”
Wells glared. “Shut up.”
But Matty couldn’t help it. He started laughing harder. Wells wasn’t amused as he lay back in the bed, rolling his eyes. “It’s so funny, Wells.”
“I don’t think so.”
“Really? I never would have guessed with the death stare you’re pinning on me!”
When the NHL portion of SportsCenter started, Matty’s laughter subsided as they watched the newest trade info. That was the great thing about dating a person who understood his profession, though, in his case, it was both their professions. They both loved knowing what was going on in the league, even though most of the time, they knew before the media.
As they watched, Matty traced Wells’s arm with his finger as he drew in slow breaths, the most amazing feeling of completion sweeping over him. He didn’t like that Alex was texting Wells, but he wouldn’t throw a fit about it. There was no point; Wells was his, and he knew that with his whole heart. Matty was lucky to have what Avery and Jace had, a love that was valued and protected. The only thing missing between Wells and Matty was a piece of paper stating they were married because everything else, even with nine months apart, was perfect.
Well, except for the fact that his family didn’t know.
Hmm. That was a major problem.
One he was fixing, and then maybe, they’d get that piece of paper.
A grin pulled at his lips before he kissed Wells’s temple, his arms coming around Matty to hold him tighter as the screen changed to a graphic reading: BREAKING NEWS.
“Huge trade news in Nashville this evening. After making the decision not to re-sign Lucas Brooks, the veteran forward who scored the winning goal in the Stanley Cup Finals, Elli Adler was being held accountable to replace him. But that wasn’t what she did.”
The screen then cut to Elli Adler, the owner of the Nashville Assassins, standing at the podium, looking gorgeous as ever, her green eyes blazing as she looked straight into the camera. “Today, we traded Mick Mantra and our first-round pick in next year’s draft for Beau Boom of the Capitals.”
“Ah, shit,” Wells hissed. “The Bruiser is going to the Assassins?”
Matty made a face. “As if that team wasn’t tough as it was.”
“Mrs. Adler is being scrutinized for her decision, trading one of her youngest and most promising forwards. But she had this to say, ‘I feel we have so much depth in the front, but with the retirement of Tate Odder and the off-season injury that has taken out Karson King for the next year, we need someone with as much depth as he had and then some. Mr. Boom is that player.”
“He’s a dick,” Wells laughed. “He knocked my tooth out because I looked at him!”
Matty laughed. “He threw his stick into my gut and then scored on me once. I don’t like the guy at all.”
“Neither do I. I wonder if Vaughn and Jensen do?” Just as Wells moved, reaching for his phone, Matty’s rang. Making a face since he wasn’t sure who would be calling at close to ten at night, he reached for his phone on the nightstand. Seeing that it was his mom, he took in a quick breath.
What if Avery had told her?
Shit.
Swallowing hard and begging his damn heart to calm down just a little, Matty hit talk as he sat up, his feet hitting the ground as he said, “Hey, Mom.”
“Matthew, oh my goodness. I just talked to Avery, and I got the pictures of you with her and Ashlyn, and I’m crying, baby. I’m just so happy!”
Letting out the breath he was holding, he closed his eyes. “Yeah. Me too.”
“I’m so proud of you! I knew it would happen, and I’ve prayed and prayed that you two would find each other once more. Knowing now that it is happening… Oh my, Matty, you’ve made my day.”
He smiled. “Thanks, Mom. It was long overdue.”
“To say the least! I can’t believe it. We can actually have gatherings now, and you’ll come. The family. All of us.”
Matty paused, his eyes falling shut. Would he be welcomed when they found out he was gay? Or that he would more than likely be bringing Wells with him? “That sounds awesome, Mom.”
“It does! We are so pleased, and I know it’s late, but I just had to call.”
“No, it’s fine. I’m awake.”
“Oh, good. So you’ll have to come to Thanksgiving this year. I’m pretty sure it’s our year since Jace’s family got them last year.”
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
She screamed with joy. “Oh my goodness! I just can’t! This is so great. Okay, I’ll let you go. Call me later this week.”
“I’m leaving for Cancun, remember? I’ll call you when I get back.”
His mom let out a sound of remembrance. “That’s right. Okay, send me pictures, and if you see a shark, run.”
