“We’ll give it another day then. Your feet look better but I don’t want you hurting yourself. Mike’s been in on the search from day one so we don’t need to worry…”

“I don’t understand what’s taking so long. They have the general idea of where I was and I didn’t see any other buildings while I was running away so…”

“Yes, but that area is rather dense. Even the choppers are having a hard time with flyovers. Not to worry, the reason it’s taking this long is because we decided not to alert the public so there’re no volunteers helping with the search.”

It was decided not to let the fact that she knew where she’d been kept known to anyone other than law enforcement. It was another preventive measure just in case her captors panicked and harmed the children, or got rid of evidence.

“Fine, one more day but that’s it. I’m only giving in because I don’t want to keep us back once we get there and my feet are a bit sore still.”

“Good, now eat your breakfast before it gets cold and then I’ll let you ravish me again before we get up and go about our day.” She put her cup down, took mine and moved the tray out of the way before straddling my lap.

Our breakfast went cold but neither of us cared. When she was done with me we spent the rest of the morning making plans as she tried to draw a map of her escape going by where she’d been picked up.

I wasn’t expecting anyone so when the doorbell rang my hackles rose and I went on high alert. Mom and dad knew to call before coming over because I didn’t want her to be startled, so I knew it wouldn’t be them.

I wasn’t expecting what followed, wasn’t prepared but maybe I should’ve been. Maybe I shouldn’t have let my guard down, but who knew these incompetent fucks would go there.

The Taker

“I thought I told you not to contact me, that I’d get in touch….”

“We have a problem.”

“What now?” I paced the floor back and forth agitated once again.

Nothing was going my way. I still didn’t know where the bitch was hiding and as the days go by I’m getting more and more stressed. I haven’t been able to go outside for fear of being seen coming and going, something that I never had to worry about before.

The unknown now hinders my movements. “I asked you a question, what problem?”

“There’s been a lot of activity in the woods these last few days. Strange men walking around and I think there was even a helicopter or two flying over…”

“What, what’re they looking for?”

“We’re not sure. I looked at the news but there was nothing about a missing child or anything like that so…”

Could it be her? Had she made her way back home after all? But I’d been staking the place out and didn’t see or hear anything. Surely I would’ve heard something by now if that was the case.

“Get out of there for the time being… and don’t let anyone see you. We’ll wait a few days and then go back. And for fuck sake don’t leave anything that could lead back to you or her around.”

I felt sick panic rising in my chest as I bit into my nails. Why was everything happening all at once? Things had been going so well, I was so close to having everything I wanted in the palm of my hand.

I flung the phone into the wall hard enough to break it. The wail that came from the next room only added to my frustration. Ever since the bitch escaped, the joy I once found in having her children has waned.

“Shut up, just shut up.” I threw open the door to the room where the two little ones were kept confined to their crib for now. I’d given the old woman I’d hired to watch them part time a few days off and sent her on vacation until things blew over.

I was sure she didn’t suspect a thing but I wasn’t about to take any chances. If the bitch made it back home, she was sure to mention giving birth as soon as the drug was out of her system and her mind became clear.

I should’ve killed her long ago. I shouldn’t have been so worried about being seen buying baby formula. That was the only reason I’d kept her around, for her milk.

Even though I’d taken every precaution, even going so far as setting up a second home a few towns over, there was still no guarantee that I wouldn’t run into someone I knew even with my disguise.

There was always a chance that things could go wrong if I wasn’t careful and that would’ve been a hard one to explain. The clothes and other baby stuff were easy. I just used my made up ID online to order.
