“I was taken not long after leaving the doctor’s office. I didn’t tell anyone about the pregnancy but my captors were already prepared. That means someone at the doctor’s office told someone else, or that someone is the one who took me.”

“Since I didn’t recognize any of the people involved, and I guess it would take lots of money to carry out an operation like this, keeping me all these years and raising two kids….”

“I don’t remember any of the nurses at the office looking pregnant or like they were carrying extra weight. In fact only one was young, about my age and very slender, and the others were middle aged.”

“I don’t see the doctor for it, why would he? And there’s no way for the two women waiting in the waiting area to know that I was pregnant.”

“You remember all of that?” She nodded her head and took a bite of toast.

“Now that the drug’s working its way out of my system a lot of things are becoming clearer. That’s why I’m not so nervous about the babies anymore.”

“What do you mean?”

“Whoever took them don’t mean them any harm, it was me that they needed out of the way. The only question now is who and why? Was I just a random choice, or was it me they were after and if so, why?”

“I don’t see how it could’ve been personal. Who do we know that would want to do something like this? And besides, no one we knew, knew that you were pregnant. Could it be that someone working in the office had a contact on the outside and they tipped them off once your pregnancy was confirmed?”

“Could be. Our address would’ve been on file at the doctor’s office so there’s no mystery there. But something’s still off about that as well. Everything was carried out too smoothly for it to have been a rush job.”

She glared at the coffee again and I just waited. I was happy to see her like this, finally, and even more so that our minds were thinking along the same lines.

After giving it much thought I had come to pretty much the same conclusions, it’s the only way I could sleep at night. As long as my children were still alive there’s hope of us finding them.

When I put all the pieces together, just as she had, I came to the conclusion that whoever had them, wasn’t intent on killing them. The fact that her milk was being taken up until a few days before she escaped meant that they were close by.

“Whatever the case, whoever’s responsible, we should have an answer soon I think. The cops have the airport on the lookout for anyone trying to leave with twins, and my guys are also on the case.”

As long as the person doesn’t start feeling trapped and act in haste… No, I’m not going to think like that. I refuse to believe that life can be that damn cruel. I had to believe that whoever this asshole was he or she didn’t have it in them to kill two innocent children.

“I want to go back…I want to join the search myself.” That one got a raised brow from me. In the past few days each time we stepped outside the house she acted like a scared rabbit.

“You want to go into the woods?”

“Yes. The only reason I was afraid before was because of the drugs, now that they’re almost out of my system completely, I no longer feel that fear. I want to find those two and make them tell us what they did with our babies.”

Her fear and reticence was only part of the problem though. “Okay, let me take a look at your feet. We can’t drive in so you’ll have to walk.” Other than her drugged state when she showed up here, her feet were the only other thing that was injured.

She’d ran through the woods in her bare feet and it was only the oversized clothes she’d been wearing that had saved the rest of her from being torn to shreds.

As it was, she’d not helped matters any the day we went shopping for the nursery. All that walking had opened her wounds and I didn’t want a repeat. I was glad though that she was willing to go with me.

I’d been on pins and needles having others take care of the search while I stayed back with her, but I wasn’t about to leave her alone. Still I’m not sure that she’s ready. Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place.

I picked up her feet and tickled her, making her giggle. The atmosphere had grown tense there for a minute, but her light laughter broke the tension some.

Her feet were much better but they weren’t completely healed. If we took it easy she might be able to walk without much pain, but dare I risk it?
