As his footsteps got closer I got ready to spring into action. “I saw you and that bitch driving down to the parking spot. She acts like she’s somebody but she’s fucking you in your car. She only likes you because you got money. What makes you better than me? I’ma shoot you in the fucking head then I’m gonna give her what she deserves.”

This fucker’s gonna die. Keep talking asshole. He kept rambling and walking and I held my breath waiting for him to reach the point I needed him to. As soon as he did, I pushed the mattress up using the force of my body behind it to push him back into the wall.

I found the hand with the gun and slammed it back into the wall hard and didn’t stop until I heard it crunch. We scuffled with the mattress between us until I kicked it out of the way and dragged him up by the neck, slamming him back into the wall.

“Get the fuck outta my house.” I kicked the gun out of the way when my foot touched it and dragged him kicking and screaming down the stairs and out the front door that he’d pried open. We were on the lawn with me on top of him pounding the shit out of his face when I heard the car pull up.

I didn’t look around to see who it was but I heard Mancini’s voice. “That’s enough kid, let him up. The neighbors are watching.”

“I give a fuck. If I kill him now I have just cause.”

“No you don’t up, up.” He pulled me up and away and it was then I noticed her dad standing there.

“Caitie, she saw…” Those were the only words I could get out.

“She’s fine kid.” I rushed to my jeep but the keys weren’t there so I took off running, no time to go inside and find them.

“Todd!” He called after me.

“I have to get to Caitie.” She must be so scared.

Todd

I heard her screaming from outside her house and her mother’s raised voice trying to calm her down. “Caitie, Caitlin!” I rushed through the door. She turned and saw me and I took her from her mother’s arms. I could feel her heart pounding hard and she was strung tight as a bow.

She grabbed at me calling my name over and over again. “I’m here baby, I’m fine.” I held her tight and tried to calm her down even though I was still running on adrenaline.

I looked over her head at her mom who was drying her eyes.

“What happened, oh my lord what’s going on?” I didn’t think about it, just held my other arm out and pulled her in too.

“I’m okay, everything’s okay.”

It looked like the whole house was awake; she must’ve awakened them with her screams. “Come let’s go sit down.” I ended up on the couch with her, her mom and her little sister. Her brothers sat across from us looking like you’d expect after being awakened by their sister’s screams and Cierra, Dana Sue and Jessie were looking on wide eyed.

“It was Brian wasn’t it?”

“Yeah it was.” I kissed her hair. The little one was squeezed up beside me tight on my other side and I could only imagine what she was thinking as I wrapped an arm around her.

Of everyone in the room, only she and I knew about the terror that was hanging over everyone’s head. She was terrified.

“Did you kill ‘im?” Aiden asked, looking like he was ready to take care of that little task himself.

“Oh heck, I left your dad and the others over there. Are you good now babe? I gotta go back.” She held on tighter.

“You don’t go.” She strangled the shit outta me but I’m not complaining. It could’ve all ended tonight; I could be dead.

“Come with me.” I looked over her head at her mom for the okay. She nodded and smoothed her hand up and down her daughter’s back.

“Go ahead, you rest aren’t going so sit back down.” Her brothers had gotten to their feet.

“Aw mom!”

“Go back to bed all of you, Catalina come I’ll put you back to bed.” She lifted her and headed for the stairs with the twins and Caleb trailing behind.

I forgot I’d ran over and we borrowed one of her dad’s trucks to drive us back. The cops were already there no doubt they’d been alerted by the neighbors who must’ve heard the shot. I saw that asshole Brian still standing talking to one of the deputies instead of in the back of a squad car.

Mancini was on his phone and Colton, Law and Creed who were the only ones staying at his house were standing next to the car. I was surprised Brian was still standing but most of the damage was to his hand and face.
