“Just let us go,” Roman said, making sure to keep eye contact with Jim. It was like facing down a hungry lion. The moment any weakness flashed through would be the moment he’d pounce.

“We will once you apologize for touching me.”

Roman bit his tongue. All he wanted to do was tell this guy to fuck right off into the sun. Instead, he stayed silent. He wasn’t about to incite the man, but he also wasn’t about to apologize to him, either.

“What? Now you’re gay and deaf?”

“Mute,” Roman corrected, unable to keep that one inside.

“Huh?” Jim narrowed his eyes. A muscle in his jaw twitched, running down his neck, making it seem like the spiderweb fluttered over his pulse.

“I’m clearly not deaf if I could hear you. You meant mute since I wasn’t answering you.”

Jim’s jaw dropped slightly before he picked it up. He likely never had people talk back to him like that, especially not two new bloods. “Are you fucking joking?”

Roman simply shook his head. He was growing tired of this guy and his Shrek-cosplaying companion. “We’re done here,” he said, moving once again to walk around Jim, Bang Bang at his side.

That didn’t seem to make Jim very happy. He said an angry “ah fuck no” before reaching out and grabbing a handful of Roman’s shirt, tugging him backward, the other hand flying through the air in a fist.

Roman was quicker, though. Prepared. He knew turning his back on Jim would be risky, but he also knew he could take him. He let his body weight drop like lead, as if gravity worked overtime just on him. Jim wasn’t prepared for the sudden heft. His fist went flying over empty air as Roman fell to the ground, recuperating in an instant, using his hands on the hot red rubber to support himself as he kicked Jim’s legs out from under him.

That drew the attention of every other prisoner in the yard. A circle quickly formed, like a magic trick, appearing out of thin air.

Roman jumped back to his feet just as Kenny threw his first punch. He dodged it with ease, dipping to the side and throwing a punch of his own. It landed directly in the center of Kenny’s gut. He curled over, spitting onto the floor.

Jim was back up and moving his arms like someone who’d seen way too many martial art films. Roman put his back to Bang Bang and held his fists up, blocking his face. Where the hell were the wardens? Roman wondered why no one was coming to break up this fight before it got any worse.

“You should have taken the fucking Snickers bar,” Jim said before launching into another attack. This time, his punch connected, smacking into Roman’s rib and likely bruising it. The skinny guy had force behind his bones. Roman dropped his arm down, catching Jim’s forearm with his elbow.

He pushed down and twisted, grabbing Jim’s entire arm. With a spin, he had Jim against him, his arm twisted backward.

Behind him, Bang Bang proved to be a brick wall that Kenny had no idea how to take down. He attempted a couple of half-hearted punches, all deflected by Bang Bang. The gentle giant was no stranger to violence, but he was clearly holding back on Kenny, and for good reason. If they were found standing above two bloody and toothless pulps, they’d be sent right back into solitary, no matter what kind of magic Salt and the rest of the Rainbow’s Seven could work outside of these walls.

Roman squeezed Jim’s arm. The crowd around them was cheering and hollering like an audience at a Roman colosseum, eager to see blood spilled on the arena.

Unfortunately for them, they weren’t going to see any blood from this fight. Three corrections officers pushed their way into the center of the circle, grabbing Roman by the neck and pulling him off Jim, doing the same with Bang Bang and Kenny. The officers must have seen that no one was gravely injured, the one holding Roman telling everyone to scatter before the entire prison went into a lockdown.

The four of them were led back into their cells and told they’d lost yard privileges for a week.

But at least Roman and Bang Bang survived their first prison brawl, which was hopefully their last.

Chapter 6

Wyatt Hernandez

The drive was quiet. After they lost the Pride and switched to a more comfortable truck, the entire team plunged into silence. Wyatt had decided it was best they start their journey up to Georgia that same night. The sooner they could get the next part of the plan started, the faster he could be in Roman’s arms again.

He busied himself on the hours-long drive with daydreams of Roman, fueled by the recent memories, the kisses that still felt fresh against his lips, his neck, his chest, his dick. He shut his eyes and rested his head against the window, pulling up images of him and Roman writhing on the bed, sweaty and naked. The most turned on he’d ever been. The most he’d ever come. All brought on by Roman, the man who was so easy to love, even after the rocky past they’d shared. Maybe even because of it.
