“I looked like I was daydreaming. It’s fine.” I just wasn’t going to tell her that I’d been thinking about that when I’d first arrived at work.

I really had been waiting for Bex to walk by, but that wasn’t any of her business, so I didn’t feel bad.

She was nosy.

But she’d also been a good boss so far and she wasn’t straight, so I’d never have to worry about her grabbing my ass. Now some of our patrons, on the other hand…

“The old man who comes in and buys the bird-watching magazines pinched my butt today.” I wasn’t going to deal with crazy old people no matter how much they bought. I wasn’t getting paid enough for that.

She just sighed. “I’ll talk to his wife again.”

I wasn’t even going to ask.

“Thank you.”

People who said the younger generation was trouble never worked around old people.

But since I was a professional, I focused on work and not my butt. Turning back to the window, I tried to remember what I’d been planning earlier. “I was thinking one of those ridiculous displays with—”

Oh shoot.

Bex walked past the front of the store.

And he smiled at me.

It was a very good thing I was standing still so there was nothing to trip over, but I somehow couldn’t hold back a sigh. I sounded like a badly written heroine in an old-fashioned romance novel and Amanda giggled.

Damn it.

“Yep, you’re just planning the window.”

She was a pain in the butt too.

“I was thinking about doing one of those color-themed windows with something silly about a blue cover.” I’d have come across as much more professional if I could’ve stopped blushing. “We got a few in this past week that all look the same. I’m starting to think everyone is using the same cover designer again. It’s ridiculous.”

Yes, I actually got my words out before I sighed again.

“I think I’m going to go outside and see how it might look.” Yes, that was a very logical next step.

Amanda managed not to laugh, but she was shaking her head as she took a deep breath. “Very good plan. See what Becker thinks. He walks by that window enough that I’m sure he would have a strong opinion.”

Her pain in the ass status was just getting bigger and bigger.

“Good idea. I’ll ask him.” Standing straighter, I managed not to blush as I stepped away from the register. “It’s always good to know what the locals think.”

She just snorted as I headed out the front door.

Bex was leaning against the wall by the door as I came out, thankfully where Amanda couldn’t see him from the register. “Did I make things awkward? I’d have made it past without distracting you if you hadn’t been right by the window.”

Shaking my head, I tried to frown because pretending to be frustrated was easier than thinking about our date. “So your bad behavior is all my fault?”

We weren’t exactly hiding anything but I wasn’t ready to talk about it with everyone in the neighborhood. With Amanda and the crazy old ladies knowing about his interests, I wasn’t sure how private that part would stay when we finally came out.

And that seemed…overwhelming.

I’d have felt more guilty about that if Bex didn’t have his own reasons to keep things quiet for the time being.

“Yep, it’s all your fault and I’m going to remember that later.” His eyes twinkled as he grinned, thoroughly enjoying the way I was blushing. “You’ve been very naughty, temping me and looking so sexy.”

I couldn’t decide if I wanted to hide against him or just hide in general, so as I was stuck in limbo, he continued to have fun. “You were even wiggling your ass in the window when I walked by last night. Don’t think I missed that, pet. I bet you were thinking about your tail when you were wiggling for me.”

“Of course not.” Well, maybe a tiny bit. “I…I was working.”

He barked out a laugh as my face just got hotter. “Is that what we’re calling it these days? Be careful or I’m going to start telling you all the reasons you’ve been very good this week.”

How that sounded more terrifying than his threat about the spanking, I’d never know…but it did…and it made me hard again. “That’s cheating. You have to behave.”

I’d have sounded more convincing if it hadn’t come out in a low, needy whine. If I could hear it, I knew Bex could, and his wicked grin proved I was right. “I never promised to behave. I’m pretty sure I just said I wouldn’t do anything stupid in the store. We’re not in the store.”

Cheater.

Dropping my voice low, I tried to sound stern. “But if I go back in there with an erection, she’ll know something’s up.”

It wasn’t until he laughed that I realized what I’d said and groaned. “You’re driving me to distraction.”
