Drake seemed determined to go over every minute detail about what had happened since the last time he’d talked to Tag. Kyle had lived it so he didn’t think he needed to pay too much attention.

He’d called the pilot his uncle had approved and made sure he understood what was going to happen. He’d made sure there would be plenty of Sriracha and Mae’s favorite beer and chocolate chip cookies. The woman who ran the palace had assured him Mae would be given a laptop to use that would be as untraceable as it could be.

She hadn’t even seemed to care that he was sending her away. He’d expected a fight, been ready for it, and it had been so much worse.

He hated how shut down she was. MaeBe had always been an open book, every emotion she felt clear on her face. He could read her so well. He’d made a study of her, and he knew what she was feeling by her expression. A cocked brow meant he was a dumbass. The left side of her mouth curving up meant she had a secret and she was eager to share. When she cried, she didn’t hold back.

She hadn’t cried. She’d been forced to kill a man and she hadn’t cried.

MaeBe cried when she watched rom coms and when she read books. She got super emotional over fictional characters, and he would have told anyone who asked that he would think that was weird. On MaeBe it was lovely and quirky, and he missed it.

“Is there somewhere else you would rather be? Because I can call you an Uber.” His uncle’s sarcastic voice broke through his reverie.

He forced himself to sit up straight. “Sorry. I’m thinking about everything we need to do before we head to the airport.”

“I’ve already had Yasmin and Genny go to the store to get you everything you might need,” his uncle explained.

“I don’t need anything, but MaeBe will.” He wanted her to be as comfortable as possible. Perhaps if she enjoyed her time in Loa Mali, she might start to forgive him. “Noelle and Hutch brought her a couple of days’ worth of clothes, but she needs more.”

“They’re picking up some toiletries for her, but I sent Hutch out to get the most important thing for you,” his uncle explained.

“I’m good. My go-bag is well stocked.” It was sad but he had a whole bag packed in case he needed to… Well, in case he needed to fake his own death and leave everything he loved behind.

“Does it have a cup?” Ian asked.

He kept a collapsible cup with him along with anything he might need to purify water in case they were out in a rural area. “Of course.”

“He means a protective cup.” Adam was sitting in on this meeting. “Like for when MaeBe kicks you in the ball sac.”

“Oh, she already did that.” Charlotte sat in the chair next to his uncle’s. She’d walked in and immediately dialed a number and put the phone on speaker so the person she’d called could listen in.

“Good for MaeBe.”

His mom. Yep. His mom was happy he’d gotten kicked in the balls. He was absolutely the bad guy to all the women of his world. “Hope you don’t expect grandkids.”

His dick still ached, though not really from the kick. It was from the brutal cockblocking he’d given himself. He’d always meant to tell her, but he’d thought she would find it charming. Or at least flattering.

No wonder he’d gotten kicked out of the CIA. He was clueless.

“I’m sure your sperm still works. Trust me. I’ve heard lots of stories of Sean’s time in the military, and he still managed to produce two kids. One after his vasectomy.” His mom was in New York with his stepdad, who was filming for some cooking show. It was lucky they weren’t in town or he was sure they would be sitting right at this table. Sean likely would have shown up last night and had to help deal with a dead body.

Oh, shit. He’d figured out where they’d put the body. He turned to his uncle. It would be just like him to leave his brother a present, and the dudes who worked there would likely shrug at a dead body and wonder who’d pissed off Chef. What they wouldn’t do was call the police.

“Please tell me you didn’t leave the present I gave you last night at Top. Please.”

His uncle’s lips curved up in the most devilish expression.

“Present?” His mom asked. “What present? Why would you store a… Ian, there better not be a body in that freezer. You know Carys is working at Top on weekends. I do not want my daughter walking into the freezer and finding someone her brother killed. Kyle, I taught you better than this. Were you raised by wolves?”
