She moved back to the bed but knew she wouldn’t get any sleep.

Chapter Eleven

MaeBe opened the door, ready to deal with whatever fresh hell the day would bring, and nearly tripped over the big body that lay across the doorframe.

Kyle. His eyes had come open, and he stared up at her for a moment. “Everything okay?”

He was asking her that? She’d spent most of the night trying to figure out how to avoid whatever trap Kyle was planning on springing on her. Somehow she didn’t think he would take no for an answer. He would be all about safety and forget the definition of the word consent. “Everything’s great. I need to get to work.”

He moved just enough that it would be hard for her to step over him. “We need to talk about that.”

“We don’t need to talk at all. Let’s go to the office and get to work,” she insisted. She might feel better when she was back at her desk, behind the computer she knew so well. Her friends would be there. She could joke with Hutch and have lunch with Yasmin and life would feel normal, or at least as normal as it could be.

Before he could answer, the door down the hall came open.

“Where did your uncle get a life-sized painting of Axl Rose done in pure Elvis black velvet style?” Drake asked as he walked toward them. “It was disturbing. I think its eyes glow in the dark.”

“Charlotte had it done a couple of years back. It was a birthday present.” Kyle straightened up like his spine no longer functioned properly, but then that was what he got for being a dumbass. There were plenty of comfy couches on the second floor. He could have pulled one of them in front of the stairs and guarded her that way, but no, he had to make a point.

He was the most stubborn person she knew, and she was close to Erin Taggart, so that meant something.

She was dressed in yesterday’s clothes with the exception of a too big for her Sanctum T-shirt she’d found in one of the closets. She’d left off the underwear since there was no saving those. They were nothing but a reminder that her pussy did not have any pride when it came to Kyle Hawthorne. Her pussy was a traitor.

Or maybe your pussy is rational and reasonable and understands that this time she should take everything she wants from this man and shove him out the door when she’s done with him. Maybe your pussy is vengeance itself.

Her brain was excellent at justification.

“I liked it.” Taylor looked beyond perfection. Of course she had a whole suitcase to rely on since she’d known she was going on a trip.

MaeBe sized the other woman up. Taylor was gorgeous with shoulder-length auburn hair done in a sleek bob. Her clothing was fashionable, but in a functional way. The slacks she wore would be easy to move in and the blouse wouldn’t inhibit her in any way. MaeBe was fairly certain that was the intended effect.

Taylor Cline dressed like the well-trained CIA operative she was.

She didn’t know much about Taylor except she was an experienced agent and obviously with the guys.

She would need to do a deep dive on Taylor Cline before she made any real decisions about how to handle her. If she got the chance. She wasn’t sure Kyle wouldn’t simply toss her over his shoulder and shove her in a cage somewhere. For her own good, of course.

“It had a whole rock and roll vibe, but from another era,” Taylor explained. “And the eyes did not glow in the dark. Drake was a little freaked out when he realized a couple of Big Tag’s kids were probably conceived in that room.”

“In that bed,” Drake said with a shake of his head. “And it has a big jukebox, but there’s only Guns N’ Roses on it, and when I tried to play any song it was ‘Sweet Child o’ Mine.’ Like ‘November Rain’? You’re shit out of luck because ‘Sweet Child o’ Mine’ is playing. Want to select ‘Mr. Brownstone’? Nope. You’re going to get ‘Sweet Child.’ And what the hell is the Adam Miles Memorial Princess Castle? Did Adam die? I talked to him last week.”

Ah, that was more Big Tag assholery. She was going to miss the hell out of it if she had to leave and find another job. “He put that in last year as a prank. Like spent a ton of money on it and everything. It’s a two-story playroom with a princess theme. It’s the pinkest room I’ve ever seen and filled with tiaras and tulle and a weird amount of poufs. You know those ball things that some people sit on.”

Kyle forced himself up, stretching out his mangled spine. “I don’t think Ian understood how versatile those things are. In a BDSM setting. Nor did he get how popular the room would be.”
