Did he think she was ridiculous? “I was only willing to do that when I had a friend on the inside. I certainly don’t intend to let Julia break my bones again to prove a point. Although I might be able to take her if she didn’t have a gun.”

She was pretty confident when it came to close unarmed combat. And if she had a good line of sight, she could totally shoot that woman. But she wasn’t going to put herself in a terrible position for no reason at all.

“I need you to understand that Kyle would lay down and die if anything happened to you.” Drake had gone gravely serious. “It’s not that he doesn’t trust you.”

Drake seemed to have missed all the changing and growing and learning things that had happened over the past couple of days. “He doesn’t trust the world, and more than that, he doesn’t trust himself. We’re working on it. I am fully ready for him to freak out at some point and lock me in a closet somewhere so I can’t get hurt. You should understand that my response is going to be to break out of that closet and still watch his back.”

“I’m going to help her,” Taylor said with a grin. “I’ve been practicing my lock-picking skills. Also, we’re pretty sure we understand enough physics to bust through a door Kool-Aid man style.”

Drake sighed. “I’m just going to ask you to be careful and remember the men in this op are going to constantly be on edge until it’s over.”

Which was a good reason to let her and Taylor take over the majority of it. If she had her way, she would leave the dudes behind and take Erin and Charlotte Taggart and Tessa Hawthorne with her. All girls. No drama. Well, except over who got to kill Julia. They might argue over that, but otherwise, it would be smooth sailing and Julia wouldn’t stand a chance because not one of those women would listen to her bullshit. She wouldn’t be allowed to monologue or cause a scene. Straight bullet through the brainpan at the first opportunity. It was the only way to go.

But she wasn’t going to tell Drake that. Or Kyle. Men were sensitive.

“Well, hopefully we get it right the first time and this can be over.” She was ready to get on with her life, with the life she could have with Kyle.

All they needed was the data.

There it was again. There was something about the data. A route that they hadn’t considered.

“I hate to tell you to go get dressed when you are so beautiful, but…” Drake began.

Taylor kissed him and turned. “But it’s time to go back to work. You should understand that we’re going on vacation after this is over. Somewhere tropical, and I’m going to sit on a beach and drink fruity cocktails and think about absolutely nothing.”

MaeBe nodded Drake’s way and followed, her brain trying to work through the problem. “You can have the beach. I’m going to Disney World. Kyle was supposed to take me to Disneyland, but I think we’re going full on World, and I’m going to make him take me to all four parks.”

Taylor looked deeply amused as she held the locker room door open. “I would not have taken you for a theme park girl.”

“I am a complex and interesting woman.” Julia didn’t seem so complex. She seemed focused on one thing and one thing only—getting Kyle back. Well, and keeping her position. MaeBe followed her back. “You’ve seen Julia in action. Does this sound like a plan she would make? Storming Sanctum?”

Taylor’s heels clicked along the floor as they made their way back to the lockers, passing the women who were getting ready for a fun evening. “Are you asking if I’ve worked up something like a profile on her?”

“That would be handy. Kyle’s been talking to Eve about Julia. She used to profile for the FBI.” She’d had to convince Kyle they needed to know more about Julia. Eve McKay could give them valuable insight into what Julia might or might not be capable of.

“Yes, Drake talked to her today as well. He’s going to talk to his mom about letting Eve interview her.” Taylor stopped at the locker she’d been assigned. “It’s going to be hard, but he thinks it might be cathartic for her. He thinks Eve might help his mom understand she didn’t do anything wrong. Sometimes the people we love do terrible things, and we can’t stop them.”

“And sometimes terrible things happen to us and we did nothing to deserve it. That’s what I’m trying to get Kyle to understand.” He was starting to get the message. The very fact that he was here and he was trying meant he was getting better. MaeBe moved three lockers down, to the one she’d used since her training days. “I can’t help but wonder what Julia could be thinking.”
