Drake

We sat in the dark for a good half an hour before my stomach made its displeasure known once again, and then she did something I never expected, not this soon anyway, after the day she’d had. She grinned!

“Are you hungry Drake? Why didn’t you say something earlier?”

“Did you eat?” I got to my feet and put her down as we turned for the kitchen. Now that I’d seen her my hunger was back full force and whatever was blocking my throat was long gone.

“I wasn’t hungry when I got home, but now…” She trailed off as she removed a roasted chicken from the fridge. “I didn’t make anything to go with it, give me a minute.” She dove back into the freezer and came out with a bag of vegetables, which she threw in the microwave.

I watched her as she moved around the kitchen to make sure that she was okay and not just putting on an act for me. Though she wasn’t quite back to the woman I’d come to know over the weekend, she hadn’t climbed back into her shell completely either.

I played around with whether or not I should tell her what I’d found out about the forum post and since she didn’t seem ready to fall apart, decided it was best I told her now rather than letting her find out some other way. Besides, she needed to know that this guy didn’t seem anywhere near ready to stop his shit.

“I have something to tell you.” Her hand stopped with the fork halfway to her mouth and from the look on her face I knew what she was expecting. I pushed my chair back and reached for her, pulling her onto my lap.

“I don’t like that look, didn’t I tell you that I’d take care of you?” I squeezed her gently to let her know I was just a little peeved with her for expecting the worst from me. “Robert is the one who posted that message to the forum.”

“How…how do you know it was him?” The fear in her eyes was giving me second thoughts, but the cat was already out of the bag so there was no going back now.

“I did a little digging on the computer and traced it back to him.”

“I think you should tell the cops working your case. That, along with the text he’s been sending you…speaking of which, did you get the stuff in the mail that I ordered?” I’d all but forgotten the damn surveillance cameras. She’d already had her number changed and I guess that’s why he hadn’t been calling her and had reverted to his latest tactics.

She got up from my lap to go get the package from the little hallway table where she’d left it. “What is this thing anyway?”

“You’ll see.” I tore into the package and removed the top of the line security cameras.

“Perfect, I’ll install them now while no one is around. That way he won’t know to hide.” I was thinking about my flat tire, something I wasn’t about to tell her about until I was sure. It took me less than an hour to hook the camera up to her front and back doors before loading them onto her phone and mine.

“These have motion detectors, whenever someone comes to the door, or on the driveway it’ll chime on your phone. If I’m not here I’ll be able to hear it as well from wherever I am.” Not that I was planning on leaving her on her own anytime soon.

“Tomorrow, we should go to the police station and add this to the report. Like I told you, there are laws against this kind of thing in this state. If you’re worried about them asking about us, don’t. I have ways around that. The principal believed me didn’t she?”

She nodded her head and stared down at her phone where she could now see a perfect HD view of the outside of her house. It wasn’t much but I hoped it gave her some sense of comfort at least.

“Let’s go to bed, I’m beat.” I’m sure she expected me to jump on her as soon as her clothes were off, but I didn’t. Instead I held her close until she fell asleep while I once again stayed awake long into the night.

The more time passed the more at ease I felt with the fact that my parents at least knew the truth. I have no doubt that if I could get mom to come around to seeing things my way that everything else would fall into place. But all I can do now is wait.

My mind was already made up though. Come what may, I’m not giving her up. Just the thought of it made me sick. To imagine her hurt and alone, discarded like she meant nothing, was almost more than I could stomach.
