“I was wondering how long you were going to sit in your car until you finally made your way inside,” are the words I’m greeted with when I finally pull myself out of my car, grabbing the bag that also doubles as a satchel of sorts, allowing me to keep a folder with my resumes inside as well as my wallet and all the other essentials I need.
“Kingston.” My voice is breathless. Those knees I said wouldn’t go weak, well, they nearly buckle on me, and every second of that moment comes slamming back inside me. The way I used my fingers to get myself off under his control, how he tasted them, a low groan crawling up the back of his throat, and definitely when he kissed me. I tasted myself on King’s lips, making the past three years when we both put distance between ourselves seem so stupid. The chemistry is there sizzling below the surface, and the way his eyes are eating up my body tells me Kingston knows it, too.
“Fuck, temptress.” My eyes close on their own. My door is still open, my hand using it as a crutch so I don’t throw myself at him and beg him to take over again. Then he says the words that have me stopping even considering taking one step closer to him, ripping my heart apart. I know down to my core that he’s right, but that doesn’t stop what the heart wants. “You come to work here, this can’t happen.”
I don’t reply right away, contemplating a few things. And you know what, he’s not the only one who can negotiate deals. “And if I don’t come to work for Ayala & Thomas Entertainment Law Group?”
King looks taken aback at my question. He opens his mouth to talk but then stops, hand reaching out, and then he looks around and abruptly stops. Yeah, I know how this could potentially go. “I’ll go ahead and leave. You don’t have to answer that, and it wasn’t fair of me to ask. I knew this would be a bad idea.” I’ll just go back to the last job that wasn’t my first pick. There are a lot of things I can handle. A man being scared to touch me in public isn’t one of them. I have more self-respect than this.
“Tessa, wait. If you want to work here, I’m all for it. You’ll get better training, and there’s room to grow. I’m not sure where you’ve applied before you came here, but I’m willing to bet the pay won’t be as good. And while we can’t pick up where we left off in the office, that doesn’t mean after hours are off-limits. I do ask that we keep this quiet, and not because of your age, so get that out of your head.” It’s like King can read my mind, which shouldn’t surprise me. There’s a reason he’s one of the top five entertainment lawyers in Nevada.
“Does it come with benefits? I mean besides the obvious.” I lick my lips and watch as Kingston’s eyes follow exactly what I’m doing.
“Yeah, temptress, it does. Let’s go inside before things take a different turn and I’m taking you back to my place.”
“Not that I’m opposed to that idea, but I do need a job before I’m forced back to waitressing. And while the money is good, the hours suck.” I shut my door, use the key fob to lock it, and turn around to proceed King, his hand touches my lower back as he walks beside me instead. I’m sure this is going against every self-imposed rule he’s created; I’ll count this as a win in my book.

KINGSTON
I’m a glutton for punishment. There’s no fucking way I’ll be able to keep my hands off Tessa, not when she’ll be in the same office, working long days and longer nights. The whole me making a stand saying if she works for Ayala & Thomas Entertainment Law Group, this couldn’t happen was a crock of shit. It’s probably why she called my bluff. If it weren’t for Mae texting me to tell me that she was offered a job, I’m not sure I would have put our differences aside, plus seeing Tessa sitting in her car psyching herself up to come inside, almost as if she was about to walk towards her death. I saw the way her eyes landed on mine, the way that tongue came out to moisten those lush pillowy soft lips I’ve tasted, remembering exactly how they felt.
“Did you get the paperwork to look over from Brendan?” I ask Mace before Tessa makes her appearance, business before pleasure and all that shit. I’ve known Brendan for years now, he’s opening up a high-end luxury car dealership her in Las Vegas and while our law firm wouldn’t usually handle something of this caliber it has it’s perks. Mace and I both like the variety of vehicles Brendan brings to the table so to go over a few contracts to help a friend out, it’s not bad situation to be in.
