“No speeding. No reckless driving. No pulling over unless you call me first and get my permission or it’s an emergency.”

“All right, I understand.”

“Good.”

“I have questions, though,” she said as he stepped back.

She had to hide her smile as he watched her warily. “And what would those be?”

“What constitutes an emergency? Is it needing some chocolate?”

“No.”

“What about some candy?” she asked.

“No.”

“What if I’m going to pee my pants?”

She had him there. That was surely an emergency.

“Then you should have told me earlier that you needed to stop to go to the toilet. Do not let it get to the point of being busting. That’s not healthy. Do you need some pee break reminders on your phone?”

Her mouth dropped open.

What. The. Heck.

“No! I do not.”

“Then you shouldn’t get to the point of nearly peeing yourself. Unless there’s something wrong with your bladder. Maybe I should run some tests.”

“There’s nothing wrong with my bladder. I just . . . get distracted.”

Wait. Why was she telling him this? She groaned. She was going insane. Why had she even started this conversation?

Because you’re an idiot.

“I won’t wait to pee, all right?” she said with exasperation.

This had completely backfired on her.

“I will put alarms on your phone if I need to.”

“Hack! You . . . I . . . urgh!”

Insane. He was definitely insane.

“Any other questions?” he asked.

Did he look smug? She thought he looked smug. Would he really do that? He didn’t seem the type to make threats he wouldn’t back up.

Damn man had her all tied up in knots.

“We’ll stop in a few hours for a break so you can pee. Keep drinking your water. And call me if you need anything. If you have to stop or you get lonely. Whatever you need.”

How did he go from having her wanting to strangle him to wanting to hug him tight and never let him go?

22

They were about twenty minutes out of Billings when her stomach started to tighten up.

She might have wondered if it was the egg sandwich she’d had for lunch.

But she knew better.

She was back. She took a shaky breath in and then let it out. This part of the trip had been pretty uneventful. Well, for her. She’d only gotten tooted at once.

Which was a miracle. Although Hack had felt the need to scold her about it after they’d stopped for a break.

The guy needed to chill out.

They’d been driving so slow sometimes she’d worried they would start going backward.

Aidan had texted her about an hour ago to let her know he was meeting her at a diner on the outskirts of town.

She knew why. And it made her feel lighter inside. Always the overprotective big brother.

A yawn caught her by surprise. She didn’t know how she could feel tired when she’d had the best sleep in years last night. Too bad she couldn’t clone Hack and keep him with her every night.

Now, you’re starting to sound like one of those psychos from a horror movie.

She rubbed her tired eyes. She had a bit of a headache. It was from all the concentrating. Following the rules was tedious.

Her phone rang and she picked up the call through the Bluetooth speakers.

“We’re nearly there. You doing okay?” Hack asked.

Warmth filled her, chasing away the chill.

“I’m good. Maybe I should go first, though. Make sure we get there before the turn of the century.”

“Not happening. You’re lucky I’m letting you drive at all.”

She rolled her eyes at his high-handedness. “You know that the speed limit is more like a suggestion, right? Same with road rules?”

“They are not suggestions!”

She held in a giggle at his horrified words. He was so easy to wind up.

“Are you deliberately poking the beast, baby?” he crooned.

Gulp.

“It might be time to stop this conversation,” she said. “We’re almost there.” She hung up on him.

Right. Deep breath in. Slowly out.

Shit. Fuck.

She’d known this would be hard and they weren’t even in the part of town where everything had happened. How much worse were things going to get?

You can do this.

Was Cash with Aidan? She chewed her lip. How was she going to react to seeing him? She had no idea.

She nearly missed Hack pulling off in front of her and had to zip over at the last moment. She ignored the beeps from behind her.

Honestly, people liked to overuse their car horns. She followed Hack over to where she could see some men standing by a couple of motorcycles.

Tears entered her eyes as she saw Aidan. She quickly parked Hack’s truck, not bothering to check if she was in the lines.

Jumping out, she raced over. “Aidan!”

Turning, he grinned at her as she threw herself into his arms. He had to take a half step back.

“Whoa, Squirt! Have you grown some since I saw you last?”

“Asshole.”

“Clown,” he countered.

She shook her head and buried her face in his chest. “Missed you too.”
