Yeah, that ass is mine, I’m gonna fuck it. Again, that caveman, possessive feeling snakes over me.

“Mmm, yummy…Jägermeister for dinner.” She wrinkles her nose as she holds the frosted green bottle up.

“Only the best, baby.” I motion for her to pour us some.

“You and Dave Grohl, I don’t know how you can stand it.” She shakes her head but pours us a good amount.

“Besides my jizz, that brown liquid is good for your throat.”

“Ammo….” She rolls her eyes but laughs, and for a second my heart hurts. Those rare smiles from her makes the entire room light up.

“You’re fucking beautiful,” I growl, watching her cheeks flush, as she looks down at her hands.

“Well, I want to be more than that.” She peeks up at me and time stops.

And I see her.

Not the diva princess the world knows. But the woman who’s been manipulated and has been performing her whole life, hiding her pain and her drive to be the best at the only thing she knows.

“Look, you don’t need to cook for me.” She clears her throat, and her mask is back in place.

“You’re right, I don’t.” My eyes caress her face, wondering how many people in her past have hurt her? “I want to.” Reaching to push a strand of her hair behind her ear, she stiffens, her whole body tight like a coiled snake wanting to strike.

“What’s the deal with Rachel?” I murmur.

“She’s my publicist. And she keeps the monsters away.” The quick change of subject causes her to snap, her voice defensive, daring me to argue. I don’t. Clearly, Courtney has some sort of co-dependent relationship with Rachel. She believes that this woman keeps her safe…that explains a lot.

“Fair enough.” I reach for the shot of Jäger. “To you, darlin’, you’re gonna light the world on fire.” She bites her bottom lip as I shoot the cool licorice spice in one swallow. She frowns as if she’s battling herself, but follows.

“Jeezusss,” she hisses and blows out.

“Tastes almost as good as you.” I wink as I lick my lips, then turn my attention to my pasta and ignoring my phone that’s vibrating nonstop on my granite counter.

“So, you like it…the album?” She leans on her elbows to watch me as I toss the pasta.

“I wouldn’t have produced it if I didn’t one hundred percent believe in you. You put it all out there in your music. If you trust me, I can break down that cage you’ve locked yourself in.” Turning off the burner, I set the saucepan down so I can look at her.

“You’re not a rock princess, darlin’. I already told you that you’re the fucking Queen.”

Her breath stutters out as she looks at me, not sure if she can believe what I’m saying.

“So…” I walk around the island. “I want your trust. All of it.” Moving in between her legs, I lean down to look her in the eye as I say, “You think you can give me that?” My words echo around the kitchen because we both know that for her to get to the next step, this is what needs to happen.

“Yes.” She nods her head. “I trust you with my music.” Her chest rises and falls, and for a second, I almost tell her the truth. That I don’t just want it with her music, I want it with her.

Her mind, body…fuck, I might even want her soul.

COURTNEY

“Courtney?” Gina yells, tapping on my bedroom door.

“Come in,” I call out as I lean forward to finish my mascara, really bummed I didn’t have Doug, my hairstylist, come over and straighten my hair. Ammo seems to like it wild, so I guess I’ll just leave it down. Not that I care what Ammo likes.

Sure, keep telling yourself that, Court.

“So, um…hi.” She smiles tightly as I glance over at her and frown. I don’t know what is with her lately, but she’s not acting like she used to. It’s like she’s watching me more intensely for some reason. I don’t know, maybe it’s because of the stalker thing, or the fact that for the last two weeks I’ve pretty much been staying with Ammo, and he has no one lurking around, so when I’m at my own home I’m more sensitive as there’s always someone here with me?

“Hi.” I smile, then go back to looking at myself in the mirror because I’m super nervous, which is silly, but I am.

Rhys Granger is having a party at his Malibu house and Ammo and I are going. Together.

“Do you think I should wear my hair up? Or leave it down? I think down.” Taking a step back to better look at myself in the mirror, Gina just stands staring at me, nervously clearing her throat.

“I don’t know, I mean, is it like a formal party, or—”

“No, it’s casual…anyway, what’s up?” Turning, I wait for her as she looks down at her phone, then back at me.
