“So what?” She inhales as smoke escapes out of her nostrils, and I hold up my hands because what the hell?

“I’m not the bad guy,” I scream louder. “I told you that I was quitting, not that the band was breaking up. Now Pat and probably Roxy are gonna sue me for slander and whatever else they can think of, right?” I turn to look at Malcolm.

“I told you not to worry about them. Back to the important shit. Ammo? What happened with him?” He looks panicked. When Malcolm’s freckles go from dark brown to pale red in seconds, you know he’s upset.

“Oh, that fucking delight. I walked in to witness him getting a blowjob by not one, but two women.” I hold up two fingers in case me saying two wasn’t clear as fucking day.

“Oh, and there were another two, maybe even three women naked in his pool.” I cock my head at him. “Yeah, he was having an orgy. And when I confronted him, he acted like he had no idea why I was in his house, and threw me out.”

“Christ.” Malcolm scrubs his hands up and down his face, and Rachel starts to laugh.

“How bad?” he demands.

“What?” I turn toward him.

“What did you say to him? I need to know everything if I’m gonna do damage control.”

“Oh my God.” I shake my head, looking over at Rachel for support, then back to him. “He’s everything that I despise. I’m not letting him near my music.”

“Court, stop being dramatic…don’t forget, you both signed a contract.” He pulls out that stupid napkin from his jeans pocket.

“You’re kidding me, right? That most likely used napkin means nothing. I hate him; in fact, hate is not even strong enough of a word to describe what I feel about that man.”

“Which is exactly why you two will create magic. It’s better if you two don’t get along, the electricity will come through in the music.” He starts to text something to someone.

“Electricity? Malcolm, I’m not working with him.” I start to laugh.

“Court, you didn’t do anything really bad, right?” He’s staring at my face, then his eyes are trailing downward as if I might have incriminating evidence on me if I don’t utter the truth.

“What are you doing? I didn’t stab him, if that’s what you are worried about,” I snap, trying to be offended, but I did have those intrusive thoughts so…

“Courtney, honey, I had no idea you were so sexually oppressed.” Rachel blows smoke into the air.

“What?” I turn to face her.

“Why on Earth would you be so offended that Ammo enjoys multiple partners?” Her eyes narrow on my face…the very face that is now on fire.

“You’re missing the point. I wasn’t upset that he was…” She arches a brow slightly.

“Okay, I was upset that he was having an orgy, but only because it’s unprofessional when he knew I was coming over,” I snap, getting angrier at her weird looks more than the fact that she told the press that Broken Vixens is over.

“Don’t get mad at me, this was all Malcolm’s idea. My job’s to market you, and I’m sorry, sweetheart, but sex sells, and without Melanie with you…” She trails off, her meaning pretty insulting.

I tilt my head at her, “Are you implying that I don’t have…sex appeal?” I mean, I’ve been accused of a lot of things, but that was never one of them.

Rachel exhales, a small smile on her ridiculous red lips. “Not at all, I just worry that without Mel’s bad girl attitude, you might come across as repressed.”

“Wow.” I stare at her. She didn’t even hesitate. Is Mercury in retrograde? I mean, I know I said I was going to fire them both, but I can’t fire Rachel. I need her to be bad cop…what the hell?

“Oh, stop. You’re drop dead gorgeous. Why do you think you’re the star? I’m just saying…” Again, her voice trails off.

“Shut up, Rachel,” Malcolm interrupts as he texts. “Alright, we’re having lunch tomorrow with Ammo at the Jitlada.” He looks up from his phone as he exhales, almost as if a huge weight has been lifted.

“Why?” I stare at him, suddenly exhausted. I literally feel like I have run the gamut of emotions these last few days…hell, these last few hours, and now I want to crawl back into bed and sleep. I’m still slightly hungover, as well.

He sighs and looks at Rachel, and suddenly the hair on the back of my neck stands up.

“What?” I puff out.

“I wasn’t going to say anything, because you do best when you are creating, not worrying about things that I will take care of, but—”

Rachel snorts and tosses her cigarette in my sink. “Mike Zane is out of jail.” She leans back on my counter, and at first my brain doesn’t connect the dots.
