“What happened?” I knew something was up the second I’d spotted her.

“Got fired.”

“Shit,” I mutter. I guess my plan worked. I should feel terrible, but I don’t. I only feel bad that she’s upset.

“Yeah, shit.” Her bottom lip puffs out. I want to suck it into my mouth. “It was a bunch of bullshit. I swear they were making crap up to fire me over.”

“Diner food it is,” I agree, not wanting to have this conversation in the middle of the bar. Addilyn wraps her legs around me as I start to move. “Is your bag in Archer’s office?”

“Yeah.” Again, to my surprise, she rests her head on my shoulder. The few drinks she’s had are starting to catch up to her now that she’s not bouncing around dancing. I have to admit that this feels so right, as though she were always meant to be here, with her warm breath tickling the skin on my neck. It’s the sweetest fucking torture.

I need to fix this shit. Get that pout off her face and her worries wiped away. It's my fault, after all. It had taken me over a month to get what I wanted: Addilyn fired from her day job.

Guess that’s not a very Captain America move, either.

Then again, if Steve Rogers was going to do something he shouldn’t, it would be for his girl. And I find myself ready and willing to do anything for Addilyn.

I’m not sure if the warmth flowing through my body is from the drinks I had or from being this close to Kane. I don’t know what it is about him, but when he’s near, I relax to a degree. All of the responsibilities I have don’t seem as overbearing, and my worries are pushed to the back of my mind for a little while. For some reason, I know nothing is going to blow up or go wrong when Kane is around. He would never let that happen. My life got better the moment he stepped into it.

“Anything else I can get you two?” the waitress asks.

True to his word, Kane took me to get something to eat. After we’d gotten into his truck, I told him it was fine if he took me home, but he wasn’t having it. I should have known better.

I’m shocked the waitress said you two because I was sure she didn’t know I was even sitting here at the table with Kane. All of her attention has been solely on him the entire time we’ve been here. Not that I can blame her. He’s hard to miss. I swear the man has gotten bigger over the last month. He has to be spending more time in the gym or something. I have no clue why. He’s already massive.

“She’ll want a side of honey with her order,” Kane tells her, not sparing her a glance.

It’s kind of rude, but I give no shits. He always brushes off women's advances. Some of the girls around the club think he’s gay. I do nothing to stop that rumor from floating around for selfish reasons. The more they think that, the less they’ll try to hook up with him.

“All right. I’ll be back with your drinks.” She turns, leaving the table.

“She's definitely going to try to slip you her number at some point.”

“Don’t want it.”

I’m starting to wonder if maybe all the talk of him being gay might actually be true. He never flirts or takes a woman up on her offer. It’s a bit confusing. I can’t figure out if he’s into me because he’s never actually made a move. In fact, when we first met he avoided me for the most part.

Slowly he’s started to push in on me, and more recently, he’s been getting more protective over me. There are also those lingering touches here and there over the last month since he started driving me home at night. My brother’s been dropping me off at the club so he can have the car and go and do whatever it is teenage boys do these days. Tonight, though, Kane full-on grabbed my ass. I’m not sure what to make of it or if I want more of it. At least that’s what I try to convince myself. But deep down inside, I know I’m lying.

“Is it hard being so dang handsome?” The drinks I had are allowing me to be a bit freer with my mouth. Not sure if that’s going to be a good or bad thing. Only time will tell.

“You think I’m handsome?” I roll my eyes. “It’s annoying. People think it’s okay to touch me. It’s not.” I fight a laugh at his complaint about women touching him. “What’s your brother up to tonight?” He changes the subject.

“He’s with Drake.”

“Good. Drake seems to be a good kid. Got good parents too and a B+ average.”
