“What?” Mia and Sev exclaimed at the same time.
“And further know that we will be watching to be certain you train her correctly,” the Elder continued, ignoring the outburst. “Nor will you be allowed to train under cover of darkness—the lights must remain on so that we can ascertain that you are doing everything in your power to bring your extremely rebellious wife under control.”
“What if I refuse?” Sev growled. “What if I won’t put on a show for you to jerk off to?”
There was some muttering and rustling among the Elders and Brother Jonash spoke up.
“Please, Brother Severith—don’t make the mistake of thinking that this Council has any kind of sexual or lecherous interest in seeing you and your wife perform together!” he said earnestly. “We are only concerned for the good of the Dome. An untrained and defiant wife is a danger to us all—she may spread her wicked ways among the rest of the women of the PPP and cause all of the husbands trouble.”
You mean a wife who had a brain and speaks her mind might actually challenge you tiny-dicked sexist assholes?
Mia longed to shout the words! Only knowing that they might force Sev to “punish” her for the Council of Elders, kept her jaw clamped shut.
“I don’t care about your reasons. What if I refuse?” Sev demanded. His voice was a low, menacing growl and his golden eyes were glowing brightly in the dim theater.
“Brother Severith, are you really going to make us threaten you?” the Elder with the deep voice asked. “Because we don’t want to—we value you and your wife as newly inducted members of the PPP! But if you refuse to comply with our orders, I am afraid we will have no choice but to push the two of you out into the Outer Darkness outside the Dome. And I’m sure you know, your lives wouldn’t last very long in the frigid, almost airless environment of the Grey Desert.”
Oh my God, they’re threatening us! They’re actually threatening us! Mia felt sick.
“What if we’d rather just leave now, in the ship we came here in?” Sev asked, his deep voice reassuringly steady. He was saying he wanted the mission to be over, Mia realized. He was pulling the plug. For once, she agreed with him. Maybe it was time to get out of here. Maybe enough was enough. Maybe—
“I’m sorry, but now that you’ve undergone the Induction Ceremony, you no longer have an option to leave,” the Elder informed them. “Also, your ship is now the property of the PPP.”
“What?” Sev roared, his eyes flashing. “What the fuck are you talking about? I never agreed to that!”
“Be calm, Brother Severith,” Brother Jonash called hastily. “You’ll be allowed to use your ship again once you and your wife prove you’re proper members of the PPP and go through a Binding Ceremony performed by the Prophet himself. Until then, we ask that you confine yourself to the Dome and make an effort to learn our ways.”
“And how long will that take?” Sev demanded.
“As soon as we see you and your wife demonstrating proper behavior, we’ll schedule your Binding,” Brother Jonash assured him. “But you must be seen to be making an honest effort—not just going through the motions.”
“Speaking of which, we still have to get through the second half of the training before this Judgment Session can be adjourned,” another Elder remarked. “We need to hurry and finish—I have another meeting soon.”
“Wait—there’s more training?” Sev exclaimed.
“Yes, but this next Instructional vid is a short one,” the Elder assured him. “It simply shows you how to properly apply your wife’s chastity devices.”
“Her what?” Sev demanded. Mia wanted to ask the same thing, but she kept her jaw grimly closed. Things were already bad enough without her speaking up and making them worse! But the next thing the Elder said nearly made her speak up, despite her determination not to.
“Her chastity devices—all the women in the PPP Dome wear them,” the Elder assured him. “They help keep a wife in line and keep her from stealing orgasms. Only a husband may put them on her and only he is able to take them off because they are keyed exclusively to his DNA.”
“But—” Sev began.
“Look, I really must get to my other meeting,” the other Elders who had complained before said. “Do we have to watch this now? Why don’t we beam the Informational vid to their domicile tonight—that way they can watch it together with the devices in hand and then Brother Severith can apply them.”
“I agree,” another Elder said.
“All right—we’ll vote on it,” the deep-voiced Elder said. “In favor?” There was a general chorus of “Ayes.” “Opposed?” There was a single “Nay” which came from Brother Jonash. However, he was overruled so the meeting appeared to be over, much to Mia’s relief. She didn’t know what in the world the “Chastity Devices” might be, but she felt like she’d had enough of the Elders’ ‘judgment’ to last her a lifetime!
