I’m nothing but a loose end that needs to be tied up.

Gathering up my courage, I start to make my way towards him. Stupidly hoping for the best.

Until he finally notices me.

The second his dark gaze falls upon me his entire demeanor changes.

Straightening in his chair, his eyes fill with that strange intensity that steals all my breath.

My heart falls into my stomach and my steps immediately slow, my legs wanting to stop and turn back.

A smile tugging at the corners of his mouth, Jude lifts his hand and crooks his finger at me. Commanding me to come closer.

Shit.

As if he knows exactly what I’m thinking, he tenses. Looking ready to pounce on me the moment I make a break for it.

I can’t run, not again.

I can’t give him that satisfaction.

Feeling as if I pushing through waves of water, I make myself walk towards him.

Attention riveted to me, the intensity in his eyes only grows as I approach.

Gripping the arms of his chair, his knuckles go white.

When I’m finally standing in front of him, we just stare at each other.

Locked in a strange dance no one else can see.

We’re just looking at each other, but the tension becomes so heavy I can’t fucking breathe.

Fuck… what is this man doing to me?

Wanting to be free, needing relief, I lick my dry lips and start to ask, “What can I—”

Before I can finish, Jude strikes.

Moving as fast as a viper, he grabs me and pulls me into his lap.

“What?!” I squeak as he wraps his arms around me.

His lap is the last place I want to be and I immediately try to push myself back up.

Only to be yanked into his chest.

The arms wrapped around me tighten.

Something touches my head then I hear him breathing in deep.

“Fuck…” he groans like a man in pain. “You have no idea how bad I need this.”

What the fuck is he talking about?

Twisting in his hold, I crane my neck back to look at him.

With his bone structure and the way the lights are flashing behind him, the look on his face is downright demonic.

“Letting you go last night was the biggest mistake of my life. I was up all night, regretting it.”

Fear spikes through me. Is he intending to go back on our deal?

“But I kept my end of the bargain. I came back!” I argue.

Jude smiles at me. “That you did.”

He looks pleased. So pleased dread fills me.

My throat tightening, I hiss, “It was just a game to you, wasn’t it?”

He’s just fucking with me for his own amusement, and my dumbass thought there was hope.

Arm loosening, he lifts his right hand and brushes his thumb against my cheek.

“You know what they say…” he says softly.

Having no clue what he’s talking about, I jerk my face away.

Looking to the table, I search for something, anything I can use as a weapon.

Fuck it, if it comes to it, I’ll start screaming my head off.

His mouth touches my ear.

It’s a light touch, barely noticeable, but something about it causes a sharp zap of pleasure to course through me.

As he breathes against the shell of my ear, I find myself shivering. “If you love something, set it free. If it comes back…”

Gently turning my face back to him, his eyes sear into my eyes. “It’s meant to be. You came back, Eden.”

I honestly don’t understand what the fuck he’s trying to say. Does he think me coming back means I accept my death?

“No, you’ve got it wrong. I came back because I don’t want to die…” I explain.

Frowning, he strokes his thumb across my bottom lip. “Why would you die? I told you I don’t want to hurt you.”

Hating the way he’s touching me. Hating it because it’s making me feel things I shouldn’t be feeling, especially at this fucking moment…

I snap, “Because I thought that was the deal!” and shove his hand away.

Jude stiffens and looks at the hand I pushed away. “I thought I made myself clear.”

He extends his fingers then clenches them into a fist.

Looking back at me, he frowns. “You were upset so I let you go. I gave you the night to get yourself and your affairs in order.”

Affairs. Fuck.

“I’ve made quite a few preparations for you,” he goes on. “I think you’ll be pleased.”

Oh god.

“Preparations?” I ask, the word barely a squeak.

Did he order my casket or something? Pick out my grave?

“Yes. You’ll have everything you could possibly need.”

Tears fill my eyes and I shake my head in disbelief.

His frown deepens. “This upsets you. Why? Did you wish to make them yourself?”

Closing my eyes, I reach up and press my palms into them. Trying my best to not completely lose my shit.

“Don’t cry,” he warns. “You know I detest it. I cannot bear to see you upset.”

That’s rich given the situation.

A laugh of disbelief bubbles up in my throat but I swallow it back.
