“I can’t,” he says gruffly, placing me down onto the ground and shoving his dick back in his pants. “I fuckin’ can’t.”

I don’t know if you’ve ever experienced that moment in life where your entire face burns with shame and your body almost feels numb as you try to remind it how to move. That’s exactly how I feel in this moment. I can’t even look at him, the humiliation is too great. I know he’s in love with another woman, I know that, yet a stupid part of me actually thought he might consider me.

Idiot.

Massive idiot.

“It’s okay,” I say, to the ground and not to him.

I still can’t look at him.

“Poppy ...” he begins.

“It’s okay, Beckett. I get it. I really do.”

I turn my back to him, only so he won’t see my face. If he sees my face, he’ll see the shame I’m trying so desperately to cover from him.

His phone rings again.

“Fuck,” he mutters. “I’m sorry.”

I hear him answer the phone, and then he’s gone.

Just like that.

Gone.

I CHANGED MY MIND ... this officially just became the worst night of my life. “How are you going to plant it on them?” Dane asks, glancing behind me at the people swarming around.

I’m supposed to be running into the store to get coffee. I have minutes, if I’m lucky, and Dane agreed to meet me.

“I’m going to tell him I have Mateo, and I’m going to plant it in his car.”

“That’s not going to work,” Dane tells me, his eyes landing on mine again. “Never going to work. If you show up without Mateo, you’re dead. You need to find another way.”

“I can’t just waltz in there with a bag full of cash and throw it in his car, Dane,” I mutter.

“Then organize a meeting, ask for more time, tell him you’ve got Mateo and will deliver him, make something up. When you go, leave a bag behind, doesn’t need to be anything complicated.”

“Have you seen my face?” I ask, narrowing my eyes. “He’s not going to just talk to me.”

“Tell him you want to add to the deal, give him Mateo and sell money to him. Come up with something, Poppy, and do it soon because you’re running out of time.”

“God, you’re as dicky as everyone else I’m dealing with.”

Dane’s eyes settle on mine. “I’m doing you a huge favor overlooking the fact that I know you’re dealin’ in illegal shit with that club. You’re lucky I want Rocco more.”

I huff and cross my arms. “I’d be dead if they knew I was talking to a cop, I’m risking far more than you, pal.”

His mouth twitches. “Just get it done, Poppy. I need a reason to bring Rocco in.”

“I’m getting it done, hot cop, calm down.”

That mouth moves again.

“Fine, call me when you’re ready for me to do something.”

“Yes, sir,” I say, saluting him. “Now I have to go and get coffee, god knows something has to keep a girl going.”

I turn and walk off, finding some coffee and buying it with the cash Riggs tossed at me. He’s playing babysitter today, because Beckett is a no show. Of course he is after what happened last night. He’s hardly going to talk to me now. God, I was so fucking pathetic, begging for it. He must think I’m desperate. God knows I would. I need to find someone else to bring in, just so he knows he’s replaceable and I’m not desperate.

One of the other club members, maybe.

“Hello, sweetheart.”

I spin around, the coffee flying out of my hand as I’m faced with the dark angel face that is my husband. Mateo is out of this world good looking, in fact, all of his men are. Kind of like these bikers, really, except they’re far more ... underground fighter kind of sexy.

Mateo is Italian, clearly, and has the kind of hair most super models would wish for. Long, falling over his forehead and around his face in these thick locks he’s always tucking behind his ears. His skin is the most divine olive brown and he has these piercing blue eyes which are so incredibly unusual for his background. He’s got a devilishly gorgeous smile and a beard that makes my legs a little shaky thinking about what it used to do to me.

Mmhmm, Mateo is hot with a capital H.

He’s also a big, big dick.

“Ahhh, Mateo,” I squeak. “How’s it going?”

God, of all the things I could have come up with, that was the worst possible one.

“I’ve been looking for you, angel,” he murmurs. “You didn’t think you could hide forever, did you?”

“Nope,” I say casually. “Also I wasn’t hiding, I was just done being married. So, yeah ...”

“You stole from me.”

“Join the club, there is literally one forming as we speak,” I huff.

He narrows his eyes. “You’re in trouble again, playin’ with bikers isn’t your scene ...”
