I offer a smug smirk in return which seems to infuriate him further.

This time he aims for the front tire, but the result is the same. It bounces off and flies into the crowd, nailing the lackey directly behind in the neck.

Slightly cracking my window, I call out, “Bulletproof, idiot.”

He growls in unhappiness during his marching over in the downpour, weapon still extended for the attack.

Closing the small, created gap is instant and offering him a sarcastic expression is right on its heels. “Where’s your boss? You know the giasshole who proposed the exchange.”

“He’s unavailable.”

“That’s why he sent you here to die instead.”

The elf scoffs in obvious outrage. “You’re fucking surrounded, Draak. Each one of these guns contains bullets that can stop you from shifting. You really think you’re getting out of here alive if you try to double cross us.”

Yes.

“Me double cross?” Gripping the wheel tighter is done in tandem with glaring. “I was told I would be met by one member of security and am greeted by a fucking group.”

“We assumed you wouldn’t come alone.”

“You assumed I couldn’t follow instructions?”

He offers a small arrogant shrug as an answer.

“I’m exactly where I was told to be with two minutes to fucking spare—indicating I had no time to create a contingency plan in the limited window allotted for my arrival considering I had to drive here.”

Another victorious expression is flashed.

“And I’ve got your prisoner clear as fucking day right behind me, kicking my goddamn seat-” the lie prompts Dai to do it, “-trying to break my fucking windows, practically begging me to pull over and snap her fucking neck.”

He peers behind me to inspect a thrashing Dai.

“You were worried about me double crossing you, yet it’s me that doesn’t see his Fated Mate anywhere in sight.”

His mouth twitches to lie when I cut him off.

“Or feel her for that matter, you pointed-eared, peppermint patty.”

Nervousness flickers in his wide stare.

“Which means you are double crossing me.”

He tries to hold his composure while arguing, “N-n-n-no. Boss just wanted us to clear the situation first. He’s got your mate ready for the swap.”

Lie.

Obviously.

Rather than retort, I offer him a challenging eyebrow.

“Hand over 921782 now, and we’ll escort you through the gate to get your female.”

“No.”

“This isn’t a negotiation, dragon.”

Dai kicks the back of my seat in faked rage causing me to grunt in real discomfort. “It isn’t.”

His head cocks to one side in confusion.

“I agreed to the terms. I have fulfilled what I was asked. Bring me my fucking mate.”

“Give us our property, or you’ll never see her again. You may not have been smart enough to create a backup plan, but we were.”

Pretending to buy his threat is what leads to me unlocking the doors. I motion my head towards her, and he quickly opens it. There’s no reluctance to retrieve the female orc nor is there any hesitation for him to swing the weapon inside the vehicle to fire. Split seconds before his finger can squeeze the trigger, Ehette’s emerald frame emerges from behind the vehicle redirecting the leader’s attention along with his entire team’s. Aimless firing at the fast-flying creature in the air leaves me a small window to disarm the direct threat. Reaching for the barrel is an immediate reaction as is jamming the weapon back into his face. Hit after hit smashes his nasal cavity, splattering blood all across my backseat, until he slumps out of the DUV lifelessly. His body splashing into a puddle catches some of their attention and prompts a storm of bullets to begin my direction. Ehette prepares to dip down to provide some sort of covering for me to get out and shifted when all of a sudden helicopter reinforcements arrive in the situation housing additional elves and firepower.

Yeah.

I had a feeling that was coming.

Hoping that Griff is watching like he’s been instructed, I open my door in preparation of joining the brawl. Rapid fire pours from the air vehicle forcing E to conduct counter maneuvers rather than just unleashing his frost breath while all other ammunition is once more aimed at me. I manage to spot a glimpse of Dai’s face as she’s being shoved into the back of an SUV to be taken to the facility, something that was not part of the plan.

What the fuck is she doing?!

Why isn’t she raging?!

Unexpectedly, one bullet successfully clips my suit pant leg yet rather than penetrating my skin, it merely sticks to it like a magnet waiting to be plucked off.

Alright. That’s…different.

Success.

I would say so. How about we really put it to the test now?

Coming from behind the door blockade causes a commotion of commands and a new wave of assault. Rounds repeatedly land on various parts of my body—shoulders, neck, jaw—sticking rather than the piercing, pain not created to any degree. Looks of horror rapidly cross their expression but vanish completely from view courtesy of the power being cut. The abrupt change to darkness provides me the single moment I need to shift before the helicopters can assist in lighting the scene.
