“Your minute is up. There’s no reason to watch you struggle when I can do something to help.” I make my presence known, not that it was necessary. Fawn felt me; the subtle change in her body gave her away.
“Fine. I didn’t realize there would be tightness in my wrists today. It wasn’t there yesterday, but it’s giving me nothing but trouble this morning. I mean seriously, I can’t even slide the buttons through.” Frustration is laced through her tone. The ointment is probably long since gone, and pulling away from her is the last thing I want to do, but seeing her annoyance with a twinge of pain in the mirror she has propped up against the wall has me doing so. Even if the way her shirt is hanging open much like it was yesterday.
“First-aid kit? I’ll re-do your bandages, help your button your clothes, then we’ll head into work.” I’m a selfish prick. It’s on the tip of my tongue to suggest she stay home for the day, but I won’t offer it. I’d be doing an injustice to the both of us.
“In the bathroom closet. Come on. I’ve already made us late enough,” she grumbles, clearly lacking the caffeine we both rely on to get us through the day. My hand finds her waist and cups it as I guide us through the bedroom. A handful of steps later, and we’re both in her decent-sized bathroom, my size taking up most of the space. Fawn is acting like it’s not a big deal that I’m in her personal space. Maybe she’s finally getting on track with the notion of us being together, unlike last night and earlier when I came here, acting as if it’s a bad idea for us to so much as be seen together. Fuck that. I’m not hiding what’s building between us.
“Here you go.” I’m too busy watching the curves of her body, the soft, delicate woman walk like she’s floating through air, wondering if at one point in her life she was a dancer.
“This won’t take long,” I tell her once she’s in reaching distance. I toss the kit on the counter, flip the lid open, find what I need, and get to work on setting things out. After that’s done, my hands go to her hips, and I pick her up and place that luscious ass of hers on the countertop.
“Wow, this all such a déjà vu.” I look at her honey-brown eyes, hair still on top of her head in some kind of bun thing. Fuck, that looks like it’s going to be a mess to tame once she lets it down.
“Yeah, well, I should have been here earlier to help you do this, then get ready,” I grunt as I work the old bandages off her wrists, hissing when I see how bubbled up the skin is and hating what I’m going to have to tell her next. “Looks like our day is changing. You’re going to the hospital. These burns look worse than I anticipated. This cream isn’t going to do jack shit, and I don’t want you scarring.” I toss the old bandage into the trash then work on the other, seeing this one is better.
“I’ll be fine. I don’t need to go to the doctor, have to fill out an incident report, and miss work. My boss has three very important meetings and can’t miss them. The time zone in California is already going to annoy him, and in turn, he’ll grumble that I didn’t schedule them at the right time.” Fawn smiles, teasing me. I fucking hate the difference in times. Three hours behind us, especially if it’s in the afternoon, making my day a lot longer than I want it to be.
“Fine, we’ll go to Parker and Nessa’s. She’s a nurse and can at least assess the situation. If she says you need to head to the hospital, we’re going. I don’t care if I have to reschedule shit myself.”
“Wow, you’ll schedule yourself? Maybe I should get hurt more often, then you’ll know what a pain in the ass all that traveling to New Orleans was for me a few weeks ago.” There’s the fire I knew she was keeping hidden.
“Quit busting my balls, woman. Anything else you need to do before we leave?” I’ve abandoned working on her wrists any further. Nessa can work her magic. I wedge my way between her thighs once again, this time dressing her instead of the other way around, grimacing that I’m covering her body, losing each curve of her body.
“My pants. Can you do the zipper and button?” Red tinges her cheeks. I take a step back and help her off the counter, hands lingering on her hips as I try to gain control over the need to strip her down to nothing besides skin and use my mouth on every square inch of her body.
