“Shit,” she breathes, realizing Logan’s right. Cassie quickly drops down beside me, all fun and games over as she hastily pulls her shoes back on before holding her hand out to me. “Cough it up,” she tells me. “The vending machine isn’t gonna start spitting out food because I’m pretty.”

Rolling my eyes, I reach into my pocket and pull out my wallet, handing her all the cash I have. It’s way too much for a vending machine, but if anyone can rise to the challenge, it’s Cass. Besides, there’s no way she isn’t going to return here without all the snacks in the world. The problem is that she’ll scarf down all the good ones before she gets back.

Both Cass and Jax return twenty minutes later, both their arms loaded up with snacks, and as my stomach starts to grumble, we all dive in, annihilating them in no time. Hell, after Logan’s game tonight, the snacks aren’t even close to enough, and he orders UberEats for every sorry bastard in the waiting room.

Hours pass and my ass starts to get very uncomfortable. Elle passed out on Logan’s lap two hours ago, and Cass has been snoring since the second she finished her meal. I’ve tried to sleep but can’t bring myself to close my eyes.

It’s nearing four in the morning, and I start getting a little nervous. This is taking a really long time. I know this shit is supposed to take forever, but judging by the updates we got from Sean earlier, it should have happened by now.

Commotion down the hallway has both the girls waking, and we all look around, meeting each other’s stare, certain this is it. Excitement burns through my veins, and I get ready to take all these assholes’ money. After all, with only four walls to stare at, it wasn’t long before we started making bets on the baby’s gender, and I feel it in my bones. It’s definitely a little boy.

We peer down the long hallway, all of us jumping to our feet. Cass and I are unable to control ourselves and both of us start creeping forward. We look down the hall, and my hand shoots out, gripping Cassie’s arm to bring her to a stop. Something doesn’t feel right about this. The commotion gets louder, and Sean comes into view as he’s pushed out of the doorway to make room for Sara’s bed. Nurses and doctors flood out behind them as they rush down the hall.

What the fuck?

They burst past us, and the look of panic on Sara’s flushed face has us all falling behind them with desperation. “What’s going on?” Logan and I ask at the same time.

Sean latches onto his wife’s hand, holding on for dear life as they rush down the hallway, and the sound of her pained cry is something I know will stay with me for the rest of my life. “She has to have an emergency C-section,” Sean calls over the noise. “The baby is stuck, and Sara’s blood pressure is too high. They’re both going into distress.”

“Fuck,” I curse. That can’t be good.

“Sean,” Sara says, looking up at him with fear in her eyes. “It hurts so bad, I think I’m going to be sick.”

He kisses her hand as they continue rushing. “It’s going to be okay,” he soothes her. “The doctors know what they’re doing. You’re both going to be okay. The baby is going to be okay.”

Sara nods, but the fear doesn’t fade from her eyes.

Jesus. Reason number one why I shouldn’t be having kids. I can’t handle this shit.

They go through a set of large double doors at the end of the long hallway, and we’re all stopped from following. Sean disappears, clutching Sara with everything he has. I want nothing more than to be in there for them, letting them know everything is going to be alright, but this is on Sean’s shoulders now. He’s got this. If anybody can keep her calm and help her through it, it’s Sean.

We stand outside the double doors, not wanting to go back down the hallway to the waiting area. They’re nearly at the finish line. Any minute they could have a baby. The first Waters baby. Fuck. I’m excited. We just need to get over this last hurdle, and then the second Sara gets to hold her baby, she’ll forget about the pain and be flooded with happiness. At least, that’s what Cass keeps telling me. Personally, I don’t think any woman is gonna forget that kind of trauma. Hell, Cass still hasn’t forgiven me for accidentally breaking her finger when she was six.

An eerie silence comes over us as we wait.

It feels odd to be waiting right outside the doors like this, but I couldn’t care less. Sean is going to come out of these doors any minute now and let us know that he’s had a baby, and when he does, I want to be right here for him. He’s going to be proud as fuck, and I couldn’t be happier.
