“I think his ego could stand getting knocked down a few steps. Maybe he’ll even get stood up for the first time in his life,” I say, getting an odd satisfaction out of the thought, although it doesn’t take long for that satisfaction to disappear as the hurt takes over once again.

I finish up in the shower and head back to my room. After snuggling into my bed, I pull the blankets right up, and as I go to plug my phone into the charger, I notice a text message from the douchebag himself.

Miller - You keep disappearing on me. Hope you’re okay.

My chest aches at his words, and I consider replying, despite knowing I should just forget about him.

Dani - Wasn’t feeling well. Jared and Sophie took me home. Not sure tomorrow night is such a great idea.

Delete.

Damn it, the fucker can just work it out himself.

And with that, I turn my phone off and crash back onto my pillow, tears in my eyes and a heart aching to be loved.

It’s barely six in the morning when I wake from the shittiest sleep known to man, and desperately needing to clear my head, I take myself for a run. After pulling on my shorts and training crop, I throw my hair up and head out the door.

A new day, a new me. No more Miller Cain weighing me down.

I head out into the early morning breeze and run until my lungs give out. Not even realizing I’ve made my way down his street, my eyes bug out of my head when I find myself right in front of his house as the front door opens. Panic tears through me, and I search for somewhere to hide, but when a person who clearly isn’t Miller appears in the doorway, relief pounds through my veins.

That relief quickly morphs into devastation as I realize it’s the girl from last night. That prick took her home. Just perfect. I bet she was an easy fuck. She probably spread her legs in seconds for the King of the Dragons.

“Hurry up, Mills,” she calls, not realizing that the runner out on the street is falling to pieces. “You promised me a breakfast date.”

Just great. This chick has a nickname for him already. I’m sure she’s been up half the night planning their wedding. She seems a little young for him, but hey, who am I to judge? It’s not like we were actually together. It’s not like I was starting to see the rest of our lives starting to play out.

“Alright, chill. I’m coming,” I hear him grunt from inside. What a jerk. Plans a date with this chick for the morning and one with me for the same night.

Wonderful.

Realizing the time for escape is quickly diminishing, I break into a run and sprint past his place. The fear that he’ll come out and discover me gawking at his new girlfriend like the loser I am is what spurs me on. And to think I actually told him about Brett. What an idiot.

I make it home and instantly slide myself right back into bed. There’s just no point in anything today.

It’s well after midday when I drag my ass out of bed and grab my phone before heading into the kitchen. I sit up on a stool as Jared cooks bacon and eggs and I turn my phone back on to find a slew of texts.

Four new messages. One from Mom and three from Miller.

Mom - Hi honey, just checking in. We miss you.

Miller - Morning. What happened to you last night? I wanted you to meet someone.

Miller - You still alive? I’ll pick you up at seven for our non-date.

Miller - ??

Fuck, I can’t have him coming around here.

Dani - Don’t worry about me, I’m fine. Tonight isn’t such a great idea.

My phone rings immediately, his name flashing up on my screen. I hit ignore and get to work on downing my bacon and egg roll as Jared watches me curiously through narrowed eyes. Miller attempts to call a few more times before finally giving up and leaving me to celebrate my pity party for one.

Once I’m finished eating, Jared and I curl up on the couch to watch The Legend of Tarzan, because who doesn’t want to watch Alexander Skarsgård’s extremely ripped body getting around half-naked? We ooh and ahh at the screen and pause at all the right places while I wait for Jared to wipe the drool off his face.

Jared hops up and heads into the kitchen, bringing a grin to my face when I hear the familiar sound of popcorn in the microwave, followed by that heavenly, buttery smell. He returns a few minutes later with two overflowing bowls and hands me one. Before his ass even hits the couch beside me, I’m scooping a massive handful right into my mouth.
