Lolo stayed at her place and Wake always traveled to her to make it easier on her.

“I still have him on…”

“We’ve already gone over that,” I said. “We were on my property. And Wake never took his fuckin’ pants off. The only thing you might could’ve seen were my tits swinging. And, just sayin’, but you didn’t arrest me.”

God, my country was coming out to play now. My accent always got thicker when I was pissed. Might could. I hadn’t said that since college.

“Maybe I should,” Graydon commented.

Sage placed his hand on my arm to quiet me before I could go off on the stupid sheriff, then stepped partially in front of me before saying, “We have already gone over that part since initially we were all under the assumption that you had him in here with ‘public indecency’ as you put it. Now that you have proof that his daughter doesn’t live with him, and that he has an alibi—airtight, might I add…” he emphasized. “It’s time to either release him, or we’ll take a different set of actions. The kind that’ll get you kicked out of your job rather quickly. Since it’s obvious that you don’t know how to do your job competently.”

Graydon’s face looked mottled red when Sage was done. “I’ll get him for something eventually.”

Sage’s face went tense when he said, “That’s illegal, too—looking for something to pin on someone.”

Graydon twisted around, his boots stomping so hard on the floor that I was surprised the ancient-looking tile didn’t break with his footsteps.

Aodhan laughed as Graydon opened the door so hard that it slammed closed on him before he could make it all the way inside—causing him to bump backward and to the side slightly.

“I think that between the three of you, he won’t know who he hates more right now,” Aodhan murmured. “I’m impressed, darlin’. You have claws.”

I tossed a glare at him over my shoulder, which caused him to raise his hands up high in surrender.

Before he could reply, though, Wake was exiting the room, rubbing his wrists.

My eyes narrowed on his wrists, and what I saw there made me livid.

“So we’re into police brutality now?” I asked carefully, trying to contain myself and my reaction.

“Or something,” Sage growled. “Sheriff Graydon will go down.”

Wake’s wrists were raw looking. And I knew that Wake wouldn’t have struggled in those unless they were too tight, forcing him to.

“It’s okay,” Wake said as he dropped his arms down to his sides. “We ready?”

“I can give you a ride back to your bike,” I grumbled darkly. “Then we can…” I trailed off. Because I didn’t know what we would do next.

I didn’t know what Wake had planned.

I knew that he usually ate dinner with his daughter, but from what I’d last heard, his daughter and Dayden had a date tonight.

That would free Wake up to do whatever he wanted to do.

“Let’s go talk outside,” Sage suggested. “Away from this corrupt place.”

I agreed wholeheartedly.

Wake caught my hand and led me out the door, and I found myself squeezing on to his appendage as if my life depended on it.

And maybe it did. Because I was two seconds away from murdering a police officer.

Which was absolutely terrible.

But it helped that I felt that Sheriff Graydon was only in an office of the law for his own enjoyment. Or possibly some hidden factor that helped him get what he needed for his back-room agenda accomplished.

“Over here,” Sage suggested as we moved to the back of the lot.

We stopped beside Sage’s Beemer, then he turned to face the two of us.

Aodhan leaned against Sage’s car, earning him a small glare from Sage.

Ultimately, though, his focus was completely on us.

“I don’t know what y’all are doing,” Sage said without preamble. “But I highly, highly suggest that y’all get married yesterday. Just remember, spouses can’t incriminate each other. There’s a law against that.”

That’s the second time I’d heard that. The first, I’d thought it was a joke. That Wake really hadn’t thought that far ahead. But, apparently, he had.

Then, without another word, he left.

“I know a guy,” Aodhan said cheerfully.

CHAPTER 21

Don’t build a higher wall. Build a longer table. Or just kill whoever is fucking with your chi. Whatever gets the job done.

-Wake to Dutch

WAKE

I know a guy.

Sage’s advice, paired with Aodhan’s ‘guy’ had us getting married in the courthouse half an hour later.

As in, completely married. No more pretending to play house.

Funny enough, my entire family—all that I had left—made it to the courthouse in time.

My daughter, Danyetta, Aodhan, and Bowie—who was all but ecstatic to see his dad—were all there, along with the rest of my crew—Bain, Etienne—who was indeed out of prison—Davis, and Cassius.

Dutch got married in a pair of cutoff shorts—not the ones I’d defiled earlier—and a black tank top. I got married in a pair of jeans that needed to be retired about fifteen wears ago, a black T-shirt, and a ball cap.
