Toni freezes and turns toward me slowly. Her mouth is hanging open. I groan.
“You’re not just nasty, you’re sneaky.”
I almost burst into laughter from her facial expression as she says the words, looking like a Martin Lawrence character. She looks me up and down as she places her hands on her hips.
I snatch my phone back and read the text for myself.
Rio: Baby, all you have to decide is if you want to ride my face or my cock. I’ll do all the rest.
I palm my face and groan again. When I peek through my fingers to look at Toni. She’s glaring at me. I close my fingers and wish for the floor to open up and swallow me.
Toni moves to my side to hiss in my ear.
“You weren’t even going to tell me. How long has this been happening, nasty butt?” She pinches my butt with her last words.
I go to answer her, but my father’s presence traps the words in my throat. He appears out of nowhere and it dawns on me, he heard Toni calling out to my mother. I could kill her.
“You’re seeing someone? Is it that real estate guy you said you weren’t too into?”
“No,” I nearly whisper.
“I hope whoever he is, he knows how to put you first.”
“Oh, it sounds like he totally understands the assignment, Uncle Percy.”
“Haven’t you done enough?” I mutter toward Toni.
“Me?”
“Hush, we can talk at lunch,” I bite out.
“What’s all the commotion about?” My mother says as she enters the kitchen.
“Toni says Carleen is seeing someone.”
“Toni needs to mind her business,” I grumble.
“I’m sure if it’s anything serious, Carleen will bring him by.”
And this is why I love my mother. She ushers my father right out of the kitchen. I spin on Toni and mush her in the head.
“Why are you hiding this? You’ve been in love with that man since you had pigtails and couldn’t walk without tripping over your own feet.”
“It’s new and I don’t know if it will last. If things blow up in my face this could get awkward.”
“More awkward than it already is? You do understand Dario is what your father is so pissed about?”
“Ugh, do I. I didn’t leave medicine to chase after my childhood crush. I love what I do.”
Toni scoffs. “Oh honey, this goes way deeper than that.”
I look at her with my brows furrowed.
“Does everyone know something I don’t?”
Toni holds her hands up in the air. She then taps my nose. “You’re going to trip over this one on your own. We’ve been warned to stay out of it.”
“By who?”
“The only person everyone around here is afraid of. Your mama. Anyway, are we doing some shopping? Sounds like you could use some new lingerie. Girl, you have to tell me everything. That’s one big, fine-ass man. He looks like he puts it down…that walk.” She sighs and fans herself.
I laugh. “I hate you.”
“Tell me I’m lying though.”
“What happened to that guy you were seeing?”
“Who? Old boy with the big dick and no skills?” She rolls her eyes. “I’ll tell you about his non-fucking ass over lunch.”
I laugh as she mocks convulsing. “Da…amn, baby, that was amazing.” She rolls her eyes again and kisses her teeth hard. “For who? Girl, I wanted to burn his drawers and light his bed on fire. Waste of time.”
I laugh so hard I have to hold my stomach. Toni is just what I need. A stress reliever.
Chapter 13
Our First Real Date
Carleen
Exhausted and excited, I push my key into the lock of Dario’s apartment with a smile on my face. I had such a good time with Blake and Toni, breakfast at my parents’ was all but forgotten. However, when Dario texted that he’d be waiting for me at home for our first real date, I left them like my ass was on fire.
I know I’ll have to hear about that tomorrow. My smile grows as the aromas of something delicious smelling hits me. The lights are dim, and candles are lit, leading the way into the apartment. My heart flutters.
I step through to the living area that opens to the kitchen and find Dario standing with his hands in his pockets. He’s in a pair of black slacks with a white dress shirt that’s rolled up to his elbows with a black vest over it.
He looks so sexy. It looks like he has been for a cut, and I know he’s shaved again from this morning. He gives me a sexy smile and beckons me to him with two fingers.
I smile back at him as I notice the Franck Muller watch I bought him for Christmas last year on his wrist. It completes the look and makes me think he may have thought about me when he got dressed.
That watch had me thinking about my life after I purchased it. My father had a fit. I learned then never to exchange gifts with Dario in front of my father again.
