The front door opened, and Law came inside just as I admitted, “No, it’s not Brittany, but it is someone special,” hoping I was doing the right thing. “This is…it’s kind of a big deal to me.”

Law was giving Bear loves as I spoke to her, watching them.

“Is something wrong? Do I need to be worried?” Mom asked, and I shook my head even though she couldn’t see me.

“No, you shouldn’t be worried, and nothing is wrong. For the first time, everything feels right.”

Law’s head snapped up, his eyes on me, and he smiled.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Lawson

It was Friday evening. Remy and I had finished dinner a little while ago. We were sitting on the couch as I flipped through streaming services, trying to find something for us to watch. Bear took up half the space, putting Remy and me on the other half, Bear’s head resting in my lap.

When my cell rang, I leaned forward and grabbed it from the coffee table to see it was Knox. “Hey, man, what’s up?” I picked at a loose string on the hole in the knee of Remy’s jeans.

“Are you coming to Griff’s tonight?”

Before Remy, I would have, and I wanted to. It was always a good time, but I wanted him to be a part of it as well. There was already so much other shit going on—seeing his mom this weekend and making plans with Steve to come out—that I didn’t want to add this to the mix. “Nah, man, I don’t think so. Maybe next time.”

Somehow, I felt Remy frown beside me. He poked my side, so I turned to look at him, and he mouthed, “Go.”

“Yeah, okay,” Knox was saying. “No worries. I just wanted to check in with you.”

“Thanks. You’re still good to take Bear on Sunday?”

“Of course,” he said a little louder. There was music in the background, and the sound of people talking and laughing. “Talk to you later.”

“You want to go,” Remy said when I ended the call.

I rolled toward him, straddled his lap, and nuzzled his throat. “What I want is to spend the night with my cock in your ass.”

He chuckled but then shook his head. “You can’t spend your life locked away because of me.”

“I mean…” I kissed his neck. “If it ends with me having my dick in your hole…” Sucked his earlobe. “Then it’s worth it.”

“I’m being serious, Law. You should hang out with your friends.”

I sighed, knowing he wasn’t going to let this go. I wasn’t in the mood to argue with him, so I got off his lap and sat beside him again. “It’s really not that big a deal.”

“It is. I don’t want to hold you back from shit because I have my issues, so…let’s go to Griff’s.”

I cocked a brow. “You’re going to Griff’s with me?”

“I’m going with or without you. Griffin is my friend too, remember? And if you plan to have your dick anywhere near my ass, I would consider going.”

I couldn’t help smiling. “Dick near your ass, huh? Are we having sex there? We might get kicked out.”

He rolled his eyes playfully. “Come on, smartass.” He held his hand out for me.

I took it and looked at him. “Rem…” I knew there wasn’t a part of him that wanted to go sit in a bar on a Friday night. He was doing it because of me.

“It’s only a bar. Please don’t coddle me.”

With my second sigh of the past few minutes, I stood. “Okay, let me go get changed.”

“Wait. We have to change to go?” Remy asked, and I laughed. He was in a Henley T-shirt and a pair of old jeans like always.

“No, you don’t have to change. I’m going to, though.”

Remy went with me to the bedroom, where I changed into another pair of jeans and put on a black button-up shirt. He was pacing, running his hands through his hair, definitely in on mode.

I didn’t want him to struggle. Remy deserved to enjoy shit like this. Why couldn’t he go out for a few drinks at a bar? But I also felt guilty for wanting to go out because I knew he didn’t like crowds, and he was nervous about someone realizing who he was, and…a part of me knew if he were going with Brittany, it would be different. He wouldn’t have that extra fear of people finding out he had a boyfriend, even though his coming out was part of the plan.

“Are you sure you want to do this?”

“I said I did, didn’t I? It’s just a drink.”

“Okay.”

We had to stop by Remy’s place for his baseball cap. He came out wearing a hoodie, even though it was warm outside. I could tell he was getting more nervous as we got closer. When I pulled my truck into a parking spot, I turned to him. “Remy…”
