“It’s one of the things I love about you,” he says softly, and my eyes fly up to his when I hear the love word.

“Um,” I start to say nervously.

“I want you to pry,” he informs me, not even making a big deal about what he just said.

“Okay.” I push it to the back of my head. “How did it go?” I try not to dwell on it.

“It went really well,” he says, nodding and looking down at the cup in his hand. I don’t know why, but it feels like I’m holding my breath underwater, fighting to get to the surface. “He answered all my questions.” He shrugs. “I still have to meet another two GMs.”

“Keep your options open,” I say what I think he needs to hear. I say what I think I should say. “I think you’ll know when it’s the right fit.” The tightness in my chest gets even tighter. “With that said.” He looks at me. “I have this thing in Dallas that I need to do. Do you want to come with me?”

He smiles at me, the same smile that gives me all the butterflies in my stomach. “Are you asking me out on a date?”

I close my eyes, laughing. “I guess so.” I bring the coffee to my lips. “I guess I am.” I look up at him as he leans down and kisses my lips.

“It would be my honor,” he accepts softly, right before he takes my mug from my hand, turning and putting both mugs on the ledge above our heads. “I think we should seal the deal.” He rolls on top of me. “Just for good measure.”

CHAPTER 30

XAVIER

The plane lands, and I look over at Vivienne, who is staring out the window. The last days have been a roller coaster of emotions. Meeting with the other GMs just confused me even more. I thought I would know when it was right, and now, I’m not sure.

I want to tell myself it’s because they all had the right answers to my questions, but the reality of the situation is I was putting Vivienne into my equation. “Are you ready?” She smiles at me when the plane stops, getting up. “Meeting a couple of my family members is one thing.” She tucks her hair behind her ear. “But the whole family is something else.”

I chuckle, getting up and standing in front of her, wrapping my arms around her waist. “How bad can it be?” She just rolls her lips at that statement, putting her hand on my chest and tapping it.

“That is a good attitude to go into this with.” She kisses my jaw before turning and walking out of the plane. I follow her down the four stairs, seeing her father standing there next to a black SUV.

“Hey, you two,” he greets us, putting his sunglasses on his head. “Surprise.”

“I want to say I’m surprised to see you here,” Vivienne says, going over to him and hugging him. “But then again, I’d be more surprised if you weren’t here.”

He laughs at her, turns to me, and holds out his hand for me to shake. “Xavier,” he says, and when I put my hand in his, he brings me in for a hug. “Looking good.”

“Um. Thank you,” I reply, unsure of what the fuck is going on. I’ve never been in this kind of a relationship where my girlfriend’s father picks me up from the airport. To be honest, the longest relationship I had was one week, and then it just fizzled out. I didn’t have time, and she wanted more.

The porter brings over the bags, placing them in the trunk. “So,” Matthew says, “how are things?”

“Dad,” Vivienne scolds. “Remember we spoke about this, boundaries.”

He throws his hands up in the air. “I didn’t ask him anything.” I look over at Vivienne, who rolls her lips and shakes her head, looking at me.

“I didn’t tell him anything, but he knows we were in Vegas for you,” she informs me, and I just nod my head. I never for a minute thought she would tell him anything about me.

“It’s okay.” I put my arm around her shoulder.

“See,” Matthew says, “it’s fine.”

We get into the SUV, and I have the pleasure, or actually displeasure, of sitting in the front next to him. “Are you staying with us?” Matthew asks, and I look over at Vivienne, trying to keep my cool. There is no way in fuck I’ll be staying with Matthew, and it’s not because I don’t like him, but because I’m not going to not sleep with Vivienne in his house. I also know I respect him enough not to do it under his roof.

“Nope,” she says. “Erika said we can stay at the condo since it’s downtown and next to the venue.”

“Okay, but we have Sunday lunch,” he tells her while looking in the rearview mirror, then turns to me. “You’ll love it.”
