CHAPTER 37

Julia

One Week Later

I don’t even have a chance to say hello before I hear him huff out, “Where are you?”

“Hello, dear,” I say, ignoring his question.

“Julia,” he hisses, and I can even tell he said it with his teeth clenched.

“Yes.” I know I’m pushing it; he’s been gone for six days. The longest we’ve been apart since we got together. He left town the day after Tristan found out he was, in fact, Penelope’s father. I guess the universe works in mysterious ways because he was about to go back on the ice but took another week on the injured list to deal with everything. From what my lawyer told me, the grandparents are fighting him.

“I’m on the edge,” he warns and I just smile, the whole six days he’s been a grouchy beast.

“I am at Michael and Jillian’s house and I’m leaving right now.” I get into my car. “I was thinking I would meet you at your place.”

“I have a better idea,” he says calmly. “I’ll send you an address, meet me there.”

“Ohh,” I say, “are we role-playing?” He groans. “Should I go home and change into a special outfit? Can we play doctor?” I fake cough. “I think I’m sick.” I fake cough again. “I need someone to take my temperature.”

“Julia,” he says. “It’s been six days.” His voice is tight. “And you want to push me?” I laugh. “I’m like a man living on the edge.”

“Okay, we can calm down. You’ve gone longer without having sex.” I roll my eyes. “So have I.”

“Just meet me at the address,” he insists, and I hear the beep come through.

“Where is this place?” I ask him, putting it in the GPS and seeing it’s three minutes away from Michael and Jillian’s place. “It’s like right around the corner.”

“I know. I’ll be there in two minutes.”

“Roger that,” I confirm, hanging up the phone and making my way over. I spot his car parked in the driveway; a smile fills my face knowing in not too long I’ll be kissing him. Everything with Chase has been at warp speed. From finally dating him to admitting I love him. Some would say it’s a whirlwind, I say slow and steady wins the race. Even though I had no idea we were in a race to begin with.

I pull up to the curb, turning the car off, getting out, and putting my phone in the side pocket of my yoga pants. I walk toward his car and the driver’s door opens. One foot comes out and I see he’s wearing brown dress shoes with blue dress pants. He steps from the car and I see he’s wearing a white dress shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His hair falls in front of his face and his hand comes up to push it away. “Well, well, well,” I say and he looks over at me, his blue eyes lighting up. I can’t even help myself; I jump into his arms. His arms wrap around my waist as mine wrap around his neck. I can’t help my legs wrap around his waist. “Hi.” I smile big at him right before my lips smash on his. I let go of his lips and bury my face into his neck. “Hi,” I say, smelling him.

“Hey, baby.” He kisses my neck. “God, I’ve missed you,” he mumbles and he squeezes me even tighter.

“Well, if you missed me so much, why are we here and not in a bed?” I unbury myself from his neck.

“Because I wanted you to see something,” he says, letting me go as my feet unwrap from his waist and slide down his body.

He holds me until my feet touch the driveway. “Fine,” I moan as his hand slips into mine. “Where are we?” I look up at the two-story massive house with a three-car garage on the side.

He walks to the door and I’m waiting for him to ring the doorbell, but instead he turns the handle of the big black door. “Um,” I say as he pulls me inside the house. “You didn’t even knock,” I whisper-yell at him. I look to the right of me, where two French doors lead to an empty room and the left side looks like a dining room. He walks into the middle of the foyer of the house and I see the big winding staircase. Looking up you can see on both sides. Chase leads the way slowly through an archway that opens up to a huge family room, leading to the kitchen. The whole back wall has windows and you can see the pool. The kitchen has a huge island with eight stools. The family room has the only furniture there is and it has the same couch as Jillian. “What do you think?” He lets my hand go as he looks around the room.
