We ordered pizzas, got the paint supplies from our car, and Perry retrieved the ladder he’d brought over from his job.
We were well into painting the walls in two different rooms when the doorbell rang. “It’s probably our food,” I said.
When I pulled open the door, Ellis’s parents were standing there with my mom and Annabeth. Our families had gotten closer this past year since we invited them over for dinner more frequently or out at one restaurant or another. It was fun and killed two birds with one stone. We also didn’t get the impression that any of them minded, so we kept doing it at least once a month.
They even came as a group to one of our gigs to show their support. It was sort of cringey to see our parents drinking and dancing, but it was also really fucking cool. Annabeth enjoyed it so much that she and Collin made an appearance by themselves at another of our shows. The kicker was that Shana brought George out the same night as a surprise for my birthday—while promising his daughter she would see him home. I knew that Ellis had secretly arranged it, and I adored all of them for it.
“We’re here to help,” Mrs. Bloom said, sweeping by me into the house. Her husband was right behind her, and he winked as if to say that it was all her idea. Our families had already toured the property when we were deciding where to live. They also heard us speak ad nauseam at get-togethers about the work that needed to be done before we moved in. Mr. Bloom had great insight into the structure of houses, and Annabeth loved suggesting decorating ideas. We took it all in stride.
“You didn’t have to—”
“Of course we did,” Mom said, coming in behind Annabeth. “This is your first home.”
“Thanks, everyone.” My eyes met Ellis’s across the room, and a sweet smile lit up his face. Fuck, we were lucky.
The pizza delivery came next, so we ate and laughed and painted rooms in our new house, where we’d undoubtedly compose more love songs. And maybe even make some babies. In theory, at least. But when it came to Ellis Bloom, I wanted it all.
