“What?”

He sits up and cups my face. “The fans will go crazy if they know my girlfriend is on tour with me and I’m writing an album for her,” he says.

“I’m not your girlfriend,” I breathe.

A crease forms in the center of his forehead. His eyes search mine. I don’t register that I’m holding my breath until he speaks.

“That’s the other thing I’m trying to figure out. Why aren’t you?”

“Why aren’t I what?”

“Mine. You should be mine,” he says, closer to my lips.

I don’t know who leaned into who. I just know we are a hairbreadth away from each other. It would be so easy to close the tiny distance and make the connection.

“Bishop, I told you how my whole life was just ruined by men. I need—”

“You need to understand that I’m not them. As your boss, I wouldn’t fuck with your lively hood just to be a dick. As your man, I’ll protect you from everything and anything I can. So, I’m going to ask you again, gorgeous. Why aren’t you mine?”

“We shouldn’t—”

I don’t get to finish my sentence. He captures my lips and fries my brain cells. Bishop doesn’t just kiss me; he consumes me. The hunger in his kiss has my toes curling. I whimper and wrap my arms around his neck.

“Fuck, you taste better than I dreamed,” he growls, shoving his tongue deeper into my mouth.

It’s not a sloppy teen invasion. Bishop uses his tongue like a well-trained artist, skilled and precise. He plucks me up from the bed, bringing me to straddle his lap.

His hands go to the hem of my shirt to lift it, but a knock sounds at the door. It’s like a bucket of ice water. I jump away, scrambling out of his lap.

“Foods here,” Joey calls through the door.

“Shit,” Bishop says, drawing a hand down his face. “I see that look. We’re not done, babe. Not by a long shot.”

“Let’s go eat. It will give us time to clear our heads,” I say.

“Nothing to clear over here. I know what I want,” he says with heat in his eyes. “This is inescapable, Saga, but I’ll give you time to think.”

Before I can say a word, he leans in and plants one more kiss on my lips for good measure. I’m dazed when he pulls away. The sexy grin on his face says it all.

I’m so fucked.

Bishop

I should’ve known that one kiss wouldn’t be enough. I wanted a taste to hold me over and I wanted to show her how good we would be together. I think we both learned a little more than I expected.

Now I stand leaning against the bus, lost in thought, wondering how one woman can turn my world upside down. I’m gone for her. Everything about her makes me want to know more. Have more.

“What’s up with you and Saga?” Dwayne chuckles as he blows out smoke from his cigarette.

We’ve stopped to let everyone get off the bus and stretch for a bit. We’re almost to Atlanta. Saga refused to let me carry her over to the bench she’s now perched on. I had to bite my tongue the entire time I watched her limp over to it.

“Complicated,” I grunt.

“Isn’t it always?”

“I understand where she’s coming from, but that doesn’t change how I feel about her,” I say.

“I’m glad to see you interested in someone again. I mean, I know you guys aren’t together, but I can see the potential. You know?” he says.

“I didn’t say we’re not together. She just needs to realize we are. I’m not backing down. I’m just giving her room to process.”

He chuckles and shakes his head at me. “Still the same old Bishop.”

“She’s different. I like the way she thinks and she… she just brings me this peace I haven’t had in a long time. If ever. I need that more than I thought.”

“Yeah, I know what you’re talking about,” he says. “I got shit to handle when I get back home.”

I turn to look at my cousin. Dwayne and I grew up together. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for him and it’s the same with him for me.

“You can go home if you need,” I say.

“Nah, I’m putting that shit off as long as I can. It’s not going to be pretty,” he snorts.

“You know that I’m here for whatever you need. Just let me know.”

“I think you should go talk to her,” he says, nodding toward Saga and ignoring my offer.

“Yeah, you’re right.”

I push off the bus and start for the other side of the rest stop. Saga looks up just as I get about two feet away. She looks at me warily as I take a seat beside her.

Reaching for her leg, I pull it into my lap. I start to rub her ankle as I watch her face. She gives me a small smile as she sighs.
