After we hurry in the rain from the lighthouse door to the front door of the house and are safely inside where it’s warm and dry, Luna flips a switch to start the gas fireplace.
“Let’s get changed and comfortable,” she suggests.
“I’m going to need you to help me out of this fur.”
“Happy to. It’s all water-soluble, so it shouldn’t be hard.”
Famous last words.
An hour later, fresh from the shower, I finally feel like myself again, and Luna is still snickering at the ordeal we just went through to get the fur and the glue off my skin.
“I’m going to need skin grafts to repair this,” I say, examining the damage in the mirror.
“You’ll be fine in a day or two,” she says as she walks up behind me and kisses my shoulder. “Also, you looked hot as the wolf. Totally worth it.”
“As long as you liked it, it’s definitely worth it.”
She grins, and I turn to her, intending to haul her off to bed.
“I’m hungry,” she says, catching me off guard.
“Now?”
“Yep. I’m going to make some grilled cheese sandwiches. You want?”
“Sure.” She takes my hand and pulls me through the house to the kitchen. “How can you be hungry at this hour? It’s past midnight.”
“I think the adrenaline of changing the lightbulb burned a lot of calories.” She pulls bread, cheese, and butter out of the fridge and sets a pan on the stove to heat up. “It was such a rush, Wolfe.”
“It’s your version of what I feel like while racing a car.”
She stops and points at me with a spatula. “Yes. Exactly. I hate that the light was out, and I hate even more that I don’t know how long it was out, but holy cow…that was a rush. I just hope I don’t have to do it again for as long as I’m the lightkeeper here. I mean, if I have to, I can. But I don’t want to.”
She bustles about the kitchen as efficiently as she did up in the lighthouse and whips up a couple of sandwiches that look like they belong in a restaurant.
“You’re going to make your guests very happy with food like this,” I inform her and take a bite of the gooey sandwich.
“Not often,” she says with an excited smile. “Because I’ve decided to take Three Sisters up on their offer.”
“What offer?”
She frowns and blinks at me. “I didn’t tell you about them offering to buy into the B&B and run the kitchen part of the business?”
“No.” I shake my head, surprised that I’m not at all irritated about being left out of some of Luna’s big news.
This is her business. It’s really not any of my concern how she decides to run it.
But I enjoy listening to her tell me about it.
She outlines what the sisters want to do, and I find myself nodding, liking the idea.
“So, it’s still special for your guests, but one less thing on your plate.”
“Exactly,” she says as she sets our empty plates in the dishwasher. “At first, I wasn’t sure because I’ve always thought that it would be all mine, you know? But it’s not nearly as sexy or romantic as I imagined. It’s a lot of work, and I don’t want to overwhelm myself and take on too much, too fast. I think partnering with the food experts is a good idea, and it enables us to offer our guests so much more than just a quick breakfast and a basket of snacks.”
“I agree.” I take her hand in mine and nibble on her knuckles, then lead her to the living room, where the fireplace continues to burn. We sit on the couch together, snuggled up. “I think it’s a smart move. They’ve done an excellent job with the existing restaurant, and I think that when all four of you put your heads together, you’ll make something incredible.”
“Yeah.” She grins and leans her head on my shoulder. “I can’t wait.”
Chapter Sixteen
Luna
The storm has been unrelenting for three days. I haven’t even left the bed yet to look outside, but I can still hear the rain falling on the roof and the heavy water overflowing the house’s gutters to crash onto the earth below.
It’s as though Mother Nature is making up for the relatively dry summer we had, all in the span of just a few days.
Before I can roll out of bed, Wolfe’s arm snakes around my middle. He tugs me against him and starts to kiss the back of my neck. He’s warm and firm, and given the way a certain body part presses against my backside, I’d say he’s in the mood for a bit of morning fun.
Which suits me just fine.
His lips cruise along my shoulder, and then he turns me onto my back and smiles down at me as he gently brushes a lock of hair off my cheek.
