“Disorderly conduct. Something about drinking in public.”

“Bullshit, and you know it, Deb. He was probably up to no good,” my aunt says as I make my way to the door without a word. I don’t want to stay a moment longer to get their attention back on me.

“What are you trying to say?” I’m out before I can hear the rest. There’s nothing left that I desire to do either, so I move as fast as I can down the stairs like I have a lion on my ass. As soon as the warm air hits my face, I can breathe again.

I’m only standing outside for a minute when a pickup pulls up to the curb. Out pops a young guy in a leather vest with a patch that says prospect. “Hey, I’m Taylor. I’m supposed to pick you up. Mack said to call her as soon as I got here.”

“Okay.” I dial Mack. “Hey, girl, I have Taylor here.”

“A young, buff blond with a prospect patch on?” she asks.

I stare at him and take in her description. He can be added to the male model category of the Riders. “Yep.”

“That’s him. He’s going to bring you here.” He opens the passenger side door while I’m on the phone.

“Okay. Thanks, girl.”

“See you soon.” I end the call and tuck it in my purse.

“Let me get these while you hop in.” I nod and wait as he takes my duffel bag. The truck is fairly clean, surprising me. When he jumps into the driver’s seat, I’m he’s full of energy that matches his age. We’re probably only a few years apart.

Immediately, my mind goes to Law and how he’d react. Would he be happy that the prospect was doing his job, or would he think to be jealous? Not that he’d have a reason because no one could compare to Law in my eyes, even if he’s not anything but my hero. “So, are you buckled up? Wrench would have my ass if I didn’t ensure you were safe.”

“Yes, I’m all strapped in.” I tap my seatbelt strapped across my chest.

“Cool. Let’s ride.” He seems like a nice guy. “So, how old are you?” he asks.

“I’m about to be nineteen.”

“Wow, I’m twenty-two. You want to catch a movie one night?”

He’s really good-looking, but my heart and eyes have only belonged to one man for so damn long that I have to say no. Hell, even the date with Thomas was because Mack said Law didn’t remember me. “Sorry. I’m not interested right now.”

“Right now?” Why did I say that?

“Okay, a better answer would be, I have feelings for someone else, so I’m not dating anyone.”

“He doesn’t need to know.”

He’d find out in a heartbeat and if Jackson was right, he’d care. “He’d know, and so would I. Thanks, but frankly, I’m not really interested.”

Taylor smiles and scrunches up his face, making him look even younger than I already thought. “So, you were just trying to be nice.”

I bite my bottom lip, feeling guilty as hell about even hinting at any possibility. “Yeah.”

He shrugs, but I can see that I’ve bruised his ego a bit. “I get it.”

“There are lots of girls around here.”

He smiles with a dimple in his cheek. “None of them as pretty as you.”

“Thanks, but no thanks.”

“I had to shoot my shot.” He shrugs it off, making me feel a lot better. I can’t imagine asking someone out only to be told nope, not going to happen. I don’t think we as women understand how hard that has to be. I’m crazy obsessed with Sheriff Lawrence and I’ve had two times to even hint at my interest and I didn’t because I’m a chicken.

“Well, let’s get out of here before Mack starts worrying.”

We’re just about to pull out of the spot when sirens blare behind us. “Oh no. Please don’t tell me they’re going inside my aunt’s apartment.”

“Do you want me to wait and see?”

“Yes, please.”

He puts the car in park, and then we both step out just as I watch Law and another officer head into the building with their guns out. “Oh my God.”

“Stay put.” He heads to the entrance. I stand outside the pickup truck, pacing back and forth waiting when I about five minutes later, Law comes outside scowling, stalking toward me.

He crowds my space, so we’re inches apart. “What are you doing with Taylor?”

“Excuse me, Sheriff?” My heart’s pounding out of my chest as his thick strong body moves closer.

“I said what are you doing with Taylor? I thought it was pretty damn clear, little hellcat.”

“He was giving me a ride to see Mack.”

“You better be talking about Mackenzie and not some guy named Mack.” The deep rumble from his chest turns me on so much I want to make him nuts, but I don’t.
